Hello,
I'm planning to start a new website. Unlike most of what I've done up to date, my intention is to target a wide variety of keywords by the [probable, unsure about this] usage of a city in the subdomain. ie.:[city].find[keyword].com
I would consider this to be a long-term project, aimed to provide me stable income in 1-2 years' time.
My problem is as follows: most of the websites I've done up to date have been either using Magento/Wordpress or 'hard' coded static websites, which only required HTML/CSS. I've never learned/made a website with 'coded' PHP.
Since I want to dedicate about 30-40% of my time into this project over the course of a year+, I want to make the website worthwhile.
Questions:
1. I am unsure about whether I should just use WordPress or learn PHP. Perhaps finding a pre-made PHP template, downloading/paying for it, editing the CSS and leaving the PHP in would work? As I said, I'm unsure about this. I dislike how little flexibility WordPress offers when compared to 'hard' coding, but I would like having a database-powered website. The idea I came up with is sort of related to the idea of ranking sites for 'dentist [city]' and selling 3-5 ad slots for money. The niche I am interested in, however, is less competitive than dentistry so I cannot ask that much for having the ads up.
I want to be able to update the websites easily. For instance, I would want to be able to add a Google +1 button to all the pages of my site with relative ease. Since the only variable in 90% of my pages is the content, I would also want to be able to add additional pages with ease, without having a headache with the menus and whatnot.
2. Taking into account that the domain is find[keyword].com: I would want to start off with easier keywords, build up authority in the general niche and then use said authority to rank the tougher keywords. Would using subdomains be a wise choice? I'm asking because I believe a subdomain counts as a 'site' inside a site and, since in my case the only thing that changes is the city, perhaps it would be better to stick with domain.com/[keyword][city] or domain.com/[city]. Unsure about this, too.
Would appreciate any related income/tips/advice on the matter.
Thanks in advance.
