At any rate, saying private companies can "do whatever they want" is beyond absurd. US law (and to a much greater extent EU law) regulates precisely what is illegal for corporations. At any rate, Google's a public company, but I think you simply meant "non-government".

Its not like they are a PUBLIC entity. Its not like they are running the internet. They have a website, they control the content on their website, and they just so happen to not want to show your content. When Google penalizes me I get pissed not at them but the situation.

I just don't get this "Sue-Google" mentality. Its a privately owned website. You don't like that your website isn't ranked? Everytime you rank, you screw somebody over. Its not like Google can show everybody, they can only show one website. And if they want to show paid results, whats the problem? Do they owe the world a free service? No. Its not a public service! And they will pay the price for paid results; they aren't as good as thus clicked on less.

Seriously, just WTF.

It's a moot point. The last I heard EU citizens can't file formal complaints with the FTC, but apparently they are uniquely qualified to tell Americans that doing so is a waste of time.

Well, complaints filed with the EC have been highly successful (given the not so poor opinion google has at present)
Seemingly Google is trying NOT to change anything for the European Markets and the EC is potentially about to formally file proceedings

Complain all you want but Google beats the competition. As long as they do, they will own the market of "Search". They made themselves a freaking dictionary word. lol To think a company that size will not take advantage of the position they own is noobish, to think it is personal against IM could actually be right. When searching Google I usually skip the first 4 results...

Yes, Google does beat the competition. These days they are using a club to beat the competition over the head. Unfortunately average webmasters are the primary target these days and not the competition created from Bing, Yahoo, Facebook, etc.

The great thing about SEO is that its not regulated. If it was regulated, it would suck. Let the free market do its thing. If google really is producing poor quality results for its users, people will go elsewhere.

Listen, Google is a private company and they have certain rights as such on the other had they advertise themselves as providng the best and most relevant results for the masses, if they dont uphold that standard or deceive the public about what they are offering they should be looked into....Just like any business If i say I am something I am not or dont deliver to the public what I am promising I am being deceitful...the public should know my criteria.. either BEST result or NOT the best result...simple.

Actually, I just tried to find a good example but the update fixed my problem. No offense intended to anybody.
It used to be either locked content in one way or the other or BS information or some company selling me something.

I don't know who gets hit the most but Google is not there for people to make money first, it is there to provide what is searched for and again without offense intended, it wasn't popping up anymore.

To read the horrorstories here in the forum makes me feel badly for those affected but from the viewpoint of G they had little choice. Giving the people what they want is their core business, it is the foundation to all other activities.

But, I do believe they abuse their position somewhat too, agreed. And I would be happy to see some real competition in the field.

This is just my opinion though, don't shoot me over it.

I love the apologists for Google, all I can say what a collection of tools! Every transparent move Google makes is dedicated to killing organic search and to driving Adwords revenue. Moreover, their pay for play move with Google shopper is nothing more than another death nail in the coffin of the small businessman. Those who are basking in the self-satisfaction that Google hasn't screwed them yet will one day be bending over for Googliath as well. And no Google hasn't affected my traffic, not yet that is!

As to the FTC they don't couldn't even spell the word monopoly. In any case, welcome to the new monopoly called the Internet and now owned by Googliath.
