I noticed this afternoon pinterest was detecting image reposts even though the image is served on a new host entirely because pinterest was able to show an "Also pinned on..." message even though the other image was on the different host. To me this would mean they're doing image analysis similar to Google's image search feature. Does anyone know how / when they started doing this? How has it affected you?

This was started a long ago, also i have seen that images that went viral in past if you host them on your site then get more repins then normal

Just you have to make sure you are putting free to share images on your host to avoid any trouble

how? they took more than half a billion $ in funding, so they have secret technology that will make you cry.
i would say they really started putting stuff like this into effect about 6 months ago, maybe longer.
it affected me negatively because they are sometimes able to detect where an images actual source is.
so they blocked some of my sites and re-directed my pins to the original websites.

They also started replacing the source of pins with the original source
if someone is registered as a business on Pinterest, FYI.

Yet another use of Image Recognition that hurts blackhatters!

Thanks all for the replies - has anyone experimented with automating filters on the images so that the duplicate detection doesn't work?

I have. Got past the detection, but for fear of Pinterest employees reading here, I'm not going to share the specifics.

Talk more on Skype? I'm trindax on there. Maybe we can help each other by comparing notes? I'm doing my transformations with python scripts so maybe there's a way I can help you automate some of what you're doing if you're process is manual.
