I'm still in the research phase for a pinterest project, so forgive me if the answer to this one should be obvious:

I see a lot of discussion around the importance of membership to Group Boards on pinterest over increasing follower count. Is this simply because Group Boards are the quickest way to increase your reach? (e.g. post to a board with 30k followers, you reach 30k people instead of the 1k you might have following your account).

And is it that posting to a group board will also have the pin appear for your existing followers? (so it's not an either/or scenario with Group Boards, it's just an obvious tactic for increasing reach in addition to your existing followers)

That's hypothetical what you have mentioned
For what i have experienced that you get 1/4 of attention from group boards compared to non-group boards

For if you are posting to 30k followers group board think that your pin will be seen by 7k or even less

The group boards followers home feed flushes pretty quickly due to higher number of pin rate
Plus there is new factor now a days which effects your exposure, if you have new account or if you have been pinning pretty quickly your profile might get ghosted, and your pin will be seen by none

So these group boards are not what they seem

You are correct, OP. Group boards increase your exposure overall. Even the big players post to group boards, check their recent pins.
