In a nutshell, what is pinging and what are its benefits?

From what I understand, its a method to let the Search Engines know that you have created a new page, right?

So why the need to ping pages that contain backlinks? I dont think I've fully grasped pinging.

    Any advice welcomed.

    Thanks,

    WK

You ping a page when you wan't search engines to scrape it faster
    which results in faster indexing.
You basically 'tell' google that you updated or have a new webpage.

Cool. And so, if i DONT ping the page, I just have to be patient and wait for it to be indexed when the spiders do their thing in their own time?

Or MUST i ping the page?
