Pinging - Is it still necessary?

So penguin deeply in trenched in all our minds, and post it i have lost a lot of webpages that were previously doing well in the serps.
I was wondering if any one thinks that pinging will do any sort of damage or have any benefit to a website, i dont really ping the money site directly usually i ping deep into my link wheels...

Anyways, what someone tells you really wont matter. There needs to be a case study with a few sites to see if it would impact in a bad way with current updates. I'm not a expert in pinging but i personally don't think that they would do that as of right now. Later on i guess they could change the algo to only accept pinging from recognized sites. Other then that don't really know what to tell you. Also remember, pinging isn't for bookmarks, it's for google to crawl the statistics site and see new website updates that they are providing. Once it see's your site, google will then go and try to crawl your site thus you being indexed. But it shouldn't count for actual SERP bookmark stats.

So when you say its not for bookmarking, do you suppose that bookmarking sites already have spiders so there is no need to alert them to new content? My strategy is to create 2.0's and then bookmark them, then i ping my bookmarks. Are you saying i am wasting my time pinging my bookmarks?
 
I believe pinging doesn't help, and also it doesn't harm. I've used pinging services many times and i didn't notice any difference after pinging.
 
no where near as important as it once was, but still worth doing.
 
just ping them after you post something on you blog it just simple that you inviting google spider to check your post and index them quickly..
 
I can understand i am wasting my time pinging high pr known websites like plurk, facebook etc, but what about low pr phpdug sites? I think that would still be useful. Opinions pls

It will only help on content site like web 2.0
in bookmark social media it's waste spider will craw them without being ping.

it will just quick the progress but google will find them eventually. yeah I think you shouldn't worry stuff like this and focus on the content of your site
