Pinging Backlinks Enough?

When you are making backlinks, is pinging them enough, or should you try to index them?
This might be a noob question, sorry ahead of time.
Depends, an isolated page could use some help, backlinks from gb's, forums, blogs, bookmarks, etc, don't need anything obviously, as they are either on already indexed pages, or appear on the frontpage as "latest additions" etc.

It depends on the type of link really, some need crawling some need an indexing service.
