Quick question...do/should you ping SAPE links? Why or why not?
You could, but there is no reason to do so. The links will be indexed by Google in a few days.

When will you guys learn... Ahrefs & Majestic & Open Site Explorer have less than 1% of the crawling capacity of Google. STOP expecting every link to show up, it's not going to happen.
Case and Point:
Recently I built >2,000 tier 1 links for a client in around a week's time span and submitted them to Lindexed and built thousands of tier 2 links (Collectively, the tier 2 links were on over 90% Google indexed domains) and I submitted those to Lindexed as well...
So far Ahrefs has found about 5 and Majestic has found 2. LOL
To put that in perspective, it's below 1/5000 discover rate for both services.
In case your curious my keywords have started showing up in Bing & Google already, so yeah, links are definitely indexed...
Oh, and OpenSiteExplorer was about the same.

What about other clients you ask? Basically the same story, less than 10% discovery in almost every domain I check (we're talking hundreds of domains).

@OP: In answer to your question, whether or not to initiate a rapid crawling or indexing service you must consider your target site's existing link portfolio, link velocity (previous, current, and future expected), link volume building, site age, and dozens of other factors, it's not a yes or no answer.
