Picking Up Powerful Expired Domain

Hi - I picked up an expired domain. this domain is for a popular international artist (outside of the US). I live inside the US and want to make sure they cant come after me legally if i turn this domain into an affiliate site.

I checked against the 'US Patent and Trademark Office' but didnt come up with anything for the domain.

Question being, is there anything i should be worried about from a legal perspective? If i start making money from this site, say using Amazon associates, can they come after me and take the revenue i have earned?

I think you should be fine if you are not pretending that the website you build is the official website of that artist/owned by that artist

Lots of fan sites out there!

I guess if you tran well for common fan terms that land to something unsavoury then you might be asked to do something, though Google will likely do something first.

If I’m looking at expired domains with tons of backlinks, how do you tell if they’re powerful? I’ve been looking at this domain with tons of backlinks but I’m afraid it could be penalized by google or something.

Thanks @mak3r , Kinda my thought process as well. I have no experience in the legal part of this. Just dont want to end up with a C&D or fork over revenue down the road.

@BassTrackerBoats any chance you have some knowledge here?

Thanks @Wiggles , the issue is that its not a fan site. its the main artists URL. so tons of traffic, super powerful domain. Just want to make sure i have a green light from a legal perspective.

I know what position you're at, but tbh no one can give a straight answer about this situation.

I've seen a lot of guys using domains just as like you do and never heard a bad-ending to it, however, it's all up to you. If I were you, I'd do it. I think the worst thing that can happen here is that you'll get a C&D letter (which is very unlikely to happen).

You have become lucky with getting that domain, use it wisely smach the living hell out of deals you can get on your subject ....

As long as u not pretending to be the artist or running a website saying presented by the artist or hinting or implying that this affiliated.

Like buying a site saying oprahreports.com and claiming this is Oprah branding lol
