PHPBUILT's Idiot-Proof Guide to Authority Site Building

I'm still trying to figure out why some sites get hit and some don't. Unless is a new thing that only happens to brand new sites post 2014.

Im getting OOP'd on articles with 1.4% that have maybe 2 partial internal link backlinks; and thats all. No external linkbuilding.

Yet my first site I ever made in Dec 2013 has densities of 3% on every page. I even just made a new page a month back at 3%. On this site every single page is ranking in an evergreen niche on page 1-2 with no backlinks at all.

I am experiencing the same as you mate. Getting OOPed (not entirely, but bumped to page 5-10 or so) when I reduce density on two-word combos to < 1.5 % as OP suggests. This example is on a one year old site, on a 1k exact keyword.

Do you think the Panda 4.0 update may have affected this?

So when I'm interlinking my pages, Should I be using exact anchor text on each page? Or switch it up like "*post title*" .... "keyword" .... "click here" ... Feel free to chime in anyone

phpbuilt already answered this questions many times in earlier replies:

Once in the top 100 ... if you're sure you did the on-page SEO correctly, its time to focus on internal linking. Certainly, if you're chasing a 15k exact ... there are going to be sub-keyword longtails that range anywhere from 500 to 5k exact. As you write about these sub-keywords, what do you do? Yep, you link to the main keyword page, at a keyword density of 20% exact, 40% good keywords (but not exact) and 40% "click here" types of links.

Thanks buddy. Sorry I must have missed it. I just skimmed through the replies.

What I usually see when building an authority site on a fresh domain is this:

Let's say we are targeting a one word-keyword with 1k exact searches per month. We write a page around the keyword "keyword", we also want to rank for "keyword reviews".

URL for this particular keyword would be the domain slash keyword-reviews

"keyword" has 1k searches per month
"keyword reviews" has 300 searches per month

I only focus on high quality articles, 750 - 1000 words.

1 - Article enters top 30 after tweaking the title, body etc. after similar rules to phpbuilts. This is usually 2-3 months after the site was built.
2 - I start adding exact match internal links in a "silo" structure. Like a "top rated products" listing in the sidebar (or topnav) with "keyword" as anchor.
3 - I then add exact match links from my niche specific PBN, let's say 3-10 links, depening on the response in the SERPs

The above usually gets me to page #1, best I've had is 3rd position. And, it stays there for about 2-6 months or so. But when the site gets around 1 year old, rankings start to drop. I can easily end up on position 50-100 somewhere. What todo at this point? Why does this happen when the site ages? I thought it was supposed to be better with age?

Does anyone have similar stuff happening? I would really like to figure out where in process I am failing :)

Take care,

Enano

Thanks for putting this together PHP. It's obvious you spent a lot of time doing it. A lot of great stuff in there

which is the best tool to calculate keyword density?

Superb guide with detailed do's and dont's .
Subscribed and eagerly waiting for the web 2.0 list OP that promised and the next version of this guide.

OP your link at the bottom of your post is redirecting to Jim's Conveyancing Melbourne.

This absolutely works... I used it on one of my reviews sites that links back to my ecommerce site... Posts target product name, product name review, product name reviews... I did this and less than 24 hours my rankings improve... went from #44 to #14... #39 to #39, etc.. Every keyword improved... Granted these keywords only get 50-100 views per month, I have over 300 products to do this for. So once everything is said and done, I will receive some nice traffic. This was with 0 backlinks by the way. Can't wait for the more in depth post.

Hello, ty for this amazing thread. If i may ask you a question,

Does keyword density matter when doing a description for a youtube video?

Some questions:

1. I want to clarify how you do affiliate products. Let's say you have an Amazon affiliate site (review site) - Am I correct that your articles are not linking out to Amazon, but rather to an ecommerce site that you have set up instead? For instance, let's say you have a vacuum cleaner review site. Instead of the traditional homepage article of the top vacuums with links to each one to Amazon in a table, you instead have 1 link to your store which THEN links to Amazon?

2. Regardless of the answer to #1, do you cloak your affiliate links? (website.com/out/link.php) or just flat out put the Amazon link with no cloaking? I think you said something previously about not cloaking stuff.

3. I know this is going to sound super stupid on my part, but when you are talking about x exact (500 exact, 1500 exact) is that monthly? I'm targeting 5k exact a month and now suddenly feel like that's maybe more competitive than I previously thought based on some of the things you've said.

4. Last question: My domain is branded (NOT a brand name) like BootsRUs.com (working with your ugg boot example from earlier). Does that mean I'm going to be screwed when I start writing about Ugg Boots because I have the word "boots" in the domain? Again, you've talked about this a couple times, and I think I'm just being dense. I THINK that I'm ok bcause I'm not targeting "boots" but Ugg Boots. I also think that I'm losing some ranking power because "boots" will be over optmized as compared to having the modifer Ugg in there. Am I in the ballpark?

Hey random question. Anyone have a WP plugin that can track page/post EDITS against SERP ranking using an API for serpbook or something?
