phpBB for Mebership Forum

I am in need a of forum to provide my users a place to collaborate, is there any reason why I should shy away from phpBB? It is free and vbulletin costs money, but I cannot afford a license just yet, so am I making a mistake by going ahead with phpBB?

Any experience out there?

There is nothing wrong with phpbb
It's free, they are a lot of mods on internet to make your forum looks better and easier to code than VB imo.

As phpbb is free, more people are associated with it and working for updates. So phpbb is better but vBulletin gives a professional look.
