I have an older website that where the permalinks were set to plain. I want to change it to post name. Is there a way of doing this without ruining my current posts?
If I remember correctly, there's a plugin which can redirect the posts for you to new urls when you change permalink stracture.
Sorry, it was long time ago so I might be dreaming.
Keep an excel file of the old urls and the new urls
After changing the permalinks - use any wp redirection plugin like this one:
wordpress.org/plugins/redirection/
to redirect the old urls to the new urls
regenerate the sitemap with the new urls
resubmit the sitemap to GSC
Yes, you can change the permalinks structure and then redirect the old posts to new ones.
If you want to keep the old slug on some pages, you can use plugin for managing permalinks like Custom Permalinks. This will allow you to change them on page/post level.
