I am 6'3" and it has only brought me grief my entire life so far. I live in a country where the average height for males is 5'7" (which has actually increased from 5'5" in the 80s). So, everything in the country is catered to that. I can't sit in bus and train seats (without folding myself like a pretzel). If I choose to stand in the bus, my head scrapes the ceiling, not to mention the numerous knocks I get on my head when the bus moves on our bumpy roads.
When I walk into a shoe store, I can't always expect to get my size. Clothes are a nightmare because my size is 'never in stock' always. Well, they say they are out of stock but I know that they don't even stock my size because it won't sell. I never had a correct fitting pair of jeans throughout my teenage years.....NEVER. I always had to alter the jeans to fit me. Things are a little better now in the past 4-5 years because people of my country are getting taller. Scientists think that's because our genes are getting adapted to ......well, nutritious food, which was never available to our forefathers, who managed to eke out a living on 2 meals per day, for 350 years.
People decide that I am best suited to play basketball. Apparently, all tall people in my country are expected to join a basketball coaching academy, their personal preferences in sports are immaterial. When I did join an academy, I was happy because all others were well over 6'6" and I was the runt there.....(I found guilty pleasure in those people's misery because I knew they had it even more tougher than my 6'3" existence).
I cannot drive a hatchback. Hatches in my country are designed for people with smaller legs. I have to fold my legs backwards to enter the driver's seat....can't drive. So, I've always had to buy bigger (costlier) cars, despite having to go into heavy debt because I just couldn't drive a smaller one.
I am always the one who gets called as 'help' for heavy lifting. Apparently, I need to put my big muscles and bones to good use. My choice in that matter is of no significance. If I'm around, people just expect me to do the heavy lifting, they don't ask me, just tell me....
My miseries did not end even when I traveled abroad (to south Asian countries). Well, those countries are adapted to a 5'5" existence !
Well, I have to add this bit too....my height did give me an advantage where it mattered.....I never had trouble with ..... let's say, attracting the opposite sex? Apparently, size does matter after all......
