I have a 1 word Instagram account and it's almost daily where I check my email and find emails from Instagram assuming I'm trying to change my password or that I've forgotten my password.

I just wonder, why would somebody try and change my password, when they don't have access to my email address? Or are they trying 'brute force' and trying different password combinations?

What's the most secure way of securing an Instagram account, so people can't pretend they are me and gain access?

Firstly, two-factor authentication should be always turned on. Also, make sure that you have backup codes stored somewhere.

Secondly, never use the same email address for account login and publicly showed in your Instagram account (of course if you show your email account for business offers in your profile or set email in contact options).

Thirdly, carefully use any email address created in own domain. Sometimes people forget to renew domain or even decide to not renew it, but forget to change login email in Instagram account. In this way you can easily lose your Instagram account.

Excellent advice, thanks. I now have the 2 step authentication and have written down the backup codes.
