I always felt that discouragement worked better for me than when somebody is encouraging me to do something. In June of 2010, I was laid off from my IT support job. I started to hang out with the wrong people; got hooked on drugs. To make this part of the story short; my "friends" stole my car and totaled it. October comes around and I HAD to get out of the state, my grandparents opened their arms to me, and I stayed there for a few months.
I was 19, loafing around not really doing much of anything (I was lazy and not looking for work). Grandparents were telling me that I should get out of the house and either go to school, or get a job. About a week later my uncle, who lives with his parents (my grandparents L), he starts yelling and screaming at me to go get a job. My uncle had recently quit his job as a "mac tech" (He can't even program).
His exact words were "You fucking suck, nobody likes you. You?re a loser. Stop acting like a rockstar, you ain?t shit. You ain?t ever gonna be shit"
I got on the next airplane with all my shit packed the very next day, flew back to my parents house. I was a high school dropout who had IT experience in office call centers since I was 16. It took me TWO MONTHS to find a job sending out resumes almost every day. I had many interviews, but nobody wanted to really hire me because I was young, and had no certifications, no diploma, and only a computer tech job that lasted 2 and a half years.
I was hired in April as an SEO engineer, and IT support onsite. I stumbled across BHW and I started to see success very quickly after reading guides and numerous tuts from all around. I was able to buy myself a car, and I'm planning on moving out from my parents house in a few months or so.
Life is... good now. I feel like I've accomplished so much for living in the highest unemployment state in the US (13.4%). I'm only 20 years old and have NOT graduated highschool, or went to college. I no longer use drugs, going to college next year and life is no longer a downward spiral.
So many people tried to tell me "oh you should just put the pipe down and look for a job". That didn't happen, but when my uncle told me that I couldn't do something, I did it. I recently talked to him, and he's still jobless 40+ something and living with his parents. I guess that college degree didn't do much for him eh?
This isn't really a IM success story, but the negativeness that my uncle had for me, was the fire to my fuel; and I thought it would be a different way to get people more motivated.
