Is it a bad thing if I have people back linking on my blog? I figured comments just made my blog look more legit

Blog commenting is not really about backlinking. It can also be seen as a way to also build relationship with your readers and other website owners.

On the other way round, blog commenting depends on the kind of comments. If the comments are related to your site content, then you should accept those comments. However, if those comments are about "Hey, great post" or "Cool, men. I like your blog", then it is likely those people are spammers just looking to get some backlinks. I do not accept such comments on any blog in my blog empire.

Accepting good comments on your blog does not mean you would lose PR. See it as a positive thing which would create trust for you and your site. This in turn makes your site to be a point of reference by people to other internet users. This is what really makes PR to increase.

ScrapeBoss is right, however, be cautious of comments with more than 1 link in them no matter what the comment. If those links are also relevant to your site, then it's okay to except them, but more than 1 link in a comment should definitely raise a red flag.

One thing I really appreciate is people commenting on my blogs for the sake of commenting. I allow them to use any keyword as anchor text instead of real names. I believe that is sufficient for building links to their own sites.

I reject those who put links in their comments, even if the comment is relevant. I want people to comment naturally and I will allow their comments.

Before scrapebox came along i used to welcome comments as they would add content to the article, now its not even worth going through 100's of spam comments just to get to the good ones.

i have all my blogs set now to where no one can comment on them. I agree since scrapebox and others come along 90% are just spam and i got tired of deleting them so i just dont let anyone post now.

Blog commenting always add to the quality and relationship between bloggers. To attract more visitors, you can set your blog links to do follow .

I use to moderate comments on my blogs, but since scrapebox knocked on the doors, I figure out it's waste of time.

somewhere I had logic that if you have comments on your blog, google could see it as it's good blog with good content, and with interactive visitors, it could only bring quality to your blog and PR, but it was long time ago.

if you have time to moderate them, it's god job.

I even have a mail only for comments, thought to hire someone to check them and approve good once. what do you think about that? is it waste of time and money?

I recommend you just moderate your comments. It may be a lot of work but backlinks are unacceptable for a clean good blog.

Thanks,
Austin

LOL.. Sorry for being of topic, but a few hours ago, I read a blog that auto approve comment. It has like one mile long comments on every post! I am sure some of the member here (if not all!) left comments there ;)

If the comment is good and the link sucks, I will just remove the link before approving the comment. If the comment is not in English it just goes into the trash.

I'm starting to get a lot of pingback crap from some yankee candle site. Nothing to do with my sites at all. LOL

Ya I shut my comments down was getting 1000 spam comments per hour too much work going through them.

If you use wordpress, quick way to reduce the amount of work needed is installing a captcha plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-recaptcha/

Most of the SB users dont use decaptcha services, so the amount of spam gets to the acceptable levels.

I'm not so sure - I let people put one link in their reply as a thank you for going to the effort to comment on my blog.

I like all sorts of comments ad welcome you to place one - I have been approving a single link in comments so long as it is meaningful.

I feel the more links you have don't really hurt you PR, my blog has PR3 and I have followed this policy.

Cutting spam to almost 0 from bots and other automation tools is in general as difficult as adding a plugin -as already suggested- or coding your custom box with a stupid question...

Of course there are a number of tools that can be trained and so forth, but unless you have a really really successful blog or an exceptional PR so to justify manual commenting you're gonna be a drop in the ocean and ppl relying on automation tools will simply move on. How do I know? Because it's what I do in both cases! :)

What kind of plugin do you use to insert a question?

I modify the code of WP on my own. You might find this page helpful:

I just delete the links and change the username then post the comment. Free content :)

it a good thing people comment on your blog !!!!
if no one comment on your blog and not even a like then you are in trouble.
it can consider a win win situation which he able to get backlink from you site and you able to build a good reputation on your site.
