Penguin: Surviving a SERP slaughter

OK,

We got smashed by Penguin, and our rankings are damaged.

What are you doing to keep the money/traffic coming in NOW, while you sort out the serps . . .so far I am doing or contemplating doing the following

1. Increase SEM - it's what the gods want, I believe :)
2. Increase 3rd party advertising - this is bringing in some warmish traffic
3. Increase activity on facebook - put up more posts, getting them shared etc. Similar result as SEM, in that it's attracting reasonable traffic
4. Blogging - not yet started, but looking to increase the activity here, and hopefully hit a few home runs . . . .

One thing I cant do is shut up shop and open a new domain.

What else are you doing?

Good idea

I NEVER BUILD BACKLINKS!
 
how about a new domain and then redirect your old one to that one.. it should keep traffic and pass link juice nicely.
 
Identify some of the hotspots where your target audiences lurk and put your offers before them.

Videos? Discussion forums related to your niche? Guest Posts on high traffic websites related to your niche?

First you need to find out the problem and try to sort it out, Its not that hard to get out of penguin penalty. If you have notime to learn and recover, buying a new domain is the best option for you. Focus more on social media for quick traffic. Advertising on 3rd party isn't a bad option, but you need to have sufficient budget for that. Lastly, keep the good and hard work going and you would be able to see profit soon enough.
 
Your idea of building a blog is good. Just make sure that it contains content that would benefit your readers. As for me, to increase traffic for my website, I also participate in social media sharings and discussions.

After going through our backlinks, I am about to disavow the spammy looking ones. I got them from webmaster tools

any thoughts as to whether this is risky - disavowing about half the links?

thing is, organic traffic is still going down - I figure it can't get any worse if I disavow spammy links?

serps are down, but mainly for the anchor text most of the spam links used.

I don't think that will work, I saw a video of matt cuts saying, that they somehow(content probably) recognize your new domain, even if you don't do redirect, so they automatically pass the juice,pr and everything else, (but I think that includes the stuff that got you down and out also, even though he didn't mention that)
 
The domain has to stay . .can't change it.

anyone got any opinions about disavowing spam links?

Do not 301 redirect a penalized domain into a new one. Otherwise penalty will pass over! Remove any sidewide links or links from low PR directories, blogrollls, or any link batch that are too many from the same site. Then diverse your anchor a bit with each url having a few more anchors to target + some continous social signals. Only use disavow if you cannot remove those links. I known people who does 100% disavow on all links and still penalized. You need to make sure you make a decent effort in removing as many as possible before filing disavow request. Then hopefully you can recover a bit on the next refresh.
 
I had to disavow links when I got to the firm I work at now. They were a fan of fiverr before I got here...
The trick is to spend the time to find out which links have done the damage, you don't want to remove any links that are doing good.
As far as removing 50% of them..... that's a lot. Too much in my opinion.
 
Penguin penalty = links penalty

Try to find out what happened.

In addition to what's been said above, content marketing is something to consider for post-Penguin SEO.
Today's content marketing is to a great extent about placing links in the text, so that they will appear in the text organically. In addition to creating unique content, useful for readers and proper distribution of the content online of course.
So, link-building has become more relationship-based and more content-oriented. And more social of course, as social signals is an absolutely safe way to get natural backlinks.
 
Also, be sure to add microformats and G+ authorship to your website if you didn't do that already.
