Penguin 1.0 + 1.1 .... my view!

Hi Guys,

I know a lot of you will not like this but i think big G has got it right again with the recent penguin 1.1 update!

When penguin 1.0 happened i saw the following ....

- crap, spammy and social whores that use fiverr gigs for things like retweets and fb likes had a massive lift and started to generate traffic!
This happened to a batch of my sites that are to be fair not worth even looking at ... my traffic spiked and even though i didnt generate many sales from them my traffic went through the roof.

- decent real business web sites got hit and hit hard for no real reason!
This happened to 3 of my seo clients ... on these contracts im not allowed to use ANY BH techniques at all even including spun articles!
Working on these sites is like watching paint dry because movment for them is sooooo sllllooooooowwwwwww!
However, they did get a proper spank by penguin? why? who knows ....

Then a few days ago big G rolled out penguin 1.1 .... and i saw the following ....

- crap, spammy and social whores that use fiverr gigs for things like retweets and fb likes had a massive spank (including my own sites)
traffic dropped out of my ass!

- decent real business web sites got a massive lift ... not back to the original ranking but back towards really where they deserve to be!

Quite funny time for me! first i see my sites go through the roof regarding traffic! but on the other hand i'm about to lose my seo contracts!
Now i see my sites fall of the face of the earth but looks like im going to keep my seo contracts?

Not sure if i should laugh or cry but what i do know is that my client sites deserved to keep rankings over my own!
So i think Big G has just about got it right with this roll out of penguin 1.1 ....

thoughts .... ?

Yea you are dead on with your views and I seen about the same. Who knows what else google has in store for us. But no matter how hard they try there will always be loop holes for us to sneak through.

I wouldn't call it a loop hole, but my strategy still revolves around quality > quantity.

A relatively new tumblr feeder site outranks my in-laws business site of 40 years. The Tumblr site ranks #1. My in-laws have a BBB accredited business, include complete contact information on the site and are linked to by many professional organizations/corporations. Nothing BH has done to their site at all, but yet this Tumblr pages come up out of nowhere with absolutely unrelated garbage on the page and takes the top spot.

Google did not get it right by any means. Google, in its continued assault on small businesses, took my in-laws site and shoved it down the SERPS. While no algorithm can detect the longest running and most reputable business in a region, Google sure as shit should be able to tell a Tumblr feeder site from a legitimate business. Considering my in-laws are linked to by many professional organizations (some Fortune 500 companies as well) and have an A+ standing with the BBB, it certainly appears Google has nullified the value of those backlinks entirely.

Google's search results are getting worst for each update. They are entirely killing small business owners and favoring large companies.

I hope their company falls down and they all burn in hell.

Didn't know the internet was around in the 70s?!

The 1.0 update brought some appreciable traffic and sales, but the 1.1 has really done me in. I basically have lost all traffic!

i think they are just pushing up all the dirty sites to the front of the web searches then they will hit with a goog slap then i think things will return to normal with goog. My thoughts behind this is when you search right now you will get a mix in your search results. If you look real close you will see sites that should not even be there right? now lets think of this also when most link gen go out to find new links they scrap 1-5 pages on a search eg. then return results. Now if they do that they will get false links which means that the links they get will not match there sites. Atleast that is what i have learned so far from the mixed up search results

My in-laws have been doing business for over 40 years. The Tumblr feeder site was created in 2012. The domain age for my in-laws site is over 15 years old.

Im not saying google has it 100% correct .... they never will! but i do think penguin 1.1 is a million times better for the end user then penguin 1.0!

For example lets say my key word is blue widgets ... when they rolled out penguin 1.0 i did a search on 'blue widgets' and found a
load of sites that i have NEVER seen before (i have been following this term for nearly 10 years). One of the results read something like the following in serps ...

www. someurl .com
log in to Parallels Plesk Panel 9.3. Enter the login name into "Login" and password into the "Password" fields respectively. Then click "Log In".

Now clearly this is just a holding page for a Plesk login page right ...
So it got me thinking that google had put a lot of weight on keywords in the url ?
But this url was a totally different niche? like wholesale foods?

This bug/fu*k up on googles part allowed a lot of crap to take over serps for a number of weeks. Crap that you and I make money from! So im not saying im happy about penguin 1.1 but from a user POV its a million times better since 1.1!
Back to the drawing board i think ...

darrensss, I can see some areas where Penguin 1.1 has improved over 1.0. But honestly, Penguin 1.0 was a miserable failure that any update to Penguin was bound to be an improvement.

I still see compromised websites taking up almost half the front page for Viagra. It looks like Google cleaned up the one compromised site sitting at position #1 for payday loans online, but that could have been a manual action to mitigate the embarrassment it caused. Not that compromised sites are Panda or Penguin related, but Google should police criminal activity more closely then they have been.

Searching for "python hosting" in Penguin 1.0 brought about the blank page in #1. Now, a forum thread from 2008 is at #1, a python.org wiki at #2 and Epio at #3 that references Python hosting in the title and nowhere in text on the page. While an improvement over Penguin 1.0, the relevance of the top three positions to the search query is quite low in my opinion.

Google still has a long road ahead of them to salvage Penguin.

I will agree with you that penguin 1.1 is better than the original penguin, but the only reason I believe this is that my site came back after penguin 1.1

For me the Panda or the Penguin had no effect, my website is still the same ... no drop or rise in traffic stats ... the same with page rank ... today I think I've got some traffic but I will be sure in a few days, because I've publish and promote some new articles.

I hope I will get over this ... also all the google +1 votes will not register on my site and I have no idea why

that may be your site doesnt have good ranking

You are right and I agree Quality is greater than quantity. However the loop holes I am talking about is just the easy way out and your way would be better in the long run but usually more work.

this is probably true...google ads don't work well on mobile...and we can also apply this logic to facebook...

This might have something to do with the "freshness" weight that the big G brought out with Panda. Perhaps Penguin gave content freshness greater weight.

Is your in-laws site continually being updated with fresh content?

If you can't beat them, join them. Tumblr is easy to rank if you use the keyword as your username. Why not set up a username with the keyword you're targeting and then point it to your in-law's site?

I've been exploiting this for a while now. Three of the tumblrs above my site are mine, so all traffic ends up going to my main site.

my site having only 2 pages is on G's first page and 2nd position, its having around 27,000 exact searches each month and my traffic is really up now.......
