Looks like I received my first penalty last night :( and a little guidance would be great.

- Only index page hit
- Index page still shows up when I search "mysite.com"
- Index page does not show up when I search "mysite keyword" (though interior pages do)
- No pages seem to be de-indexed.
- site:mysite.com still shows 5100 pages

Recent background: I had a smaller site, built like 5000 pages in the last few months. Did a couple small profile blast to the new pages, but in the last month its been higher quality and lower numbers of links as well as decent content.

I'm open to deleting all the extra pages if the consensus is that the lower quality pages/links pointing to them are to blame. Just wasn't sure that was it since they have not been hit.

Hi I wouldn't panic just yet I have had this happen multiple times and it then come back. I had 1 site that 2 weeks ago disappeared when you put the brand name in (was +10 pages) I've built some more links and its now back on page 1 but still below internal pages.
 
I would review your on site content and links pointing to your site. After the recent Update(s) from Google, make sure your on site content is good quality as they want to make sure that searches are receiving the content and results they're looking for and also make sure your Tier 1 and Tiers 2 links are good quality and not spam links.
 
I think you should wait after removing the crappy links. if it comes back then good otherwise you can take other steps.
 
I would suggest you let it play out for a week or two and see what happens before taking any drastic action.

Google love shuffling the results at random to measure how the webmaster reacts - they patented that =/
 
Thanks guys. I'm not panicked and it doesn't seem to be a serious penalty... Assuming that's what it is, but its good to hear the feedback. I'll continue on and see what happens in the next few weeks.
 
And another two sites seem to be hit, but not deindexed. Guess I better look at any interlinking that I might have there.
 
make sure your content is good for all pages..if not then delete low quality content pages
 
Sounds initially like a penguin penalty, but would not say for certain right now.

How is your anchor text diversity? Could you post your top 5 anchor texts, plus percentage here? Would still be OK if you censored your URL and keywords etc
 
Fucking hell. I just found out all my sites were giving googlebot the old 403 error which hopefully is why they were being killed off. Time will tell as I bitch out my hosting provider, but transferred one domain and it's a plain old 200 status.

Well, better off than a penalty.
