1. Search for domain name without http://.
Healthy PBN unit should rank within top 3 pages for its own name. (unless it's sandboxed)
2. Try ranking a new page on the unit for a very easy keyword.
It should appear within top 100 within few weeks.
3.
Create a backlink from it.
Target a very easy, relevant keyword on low ranking page (in the 3-5 page range).
Health PBN unit should push it up.

You'll know a PBN got hit if it disappears from Google or your traffic drops fast. You can check with tools like Ahrefs to see if links are gone. If you notice that, cut the links to your main site quickly.

Nowadays buffering like you call it (the more popular name is tiering) is plain useless.
You must have the skill to see if the PBN is useless or not (and for hidden pbn you might ultimately see them coming into your GSC if they are minimally good).
You are hindering yourself if the PBN is good by tiering and you are wasting your time if it's useless. There is nothing in between. The era of manual actions has ended, everything is automated nowadays to death.
You can even blast your MS with hundreds of penalized sites and it would not even matter. If you are super frightened of penalties, you could do a tier in between (a buffer as you call it), but only for really bad mass bought PBN or blasts. If you are building or picking your PBN selectively, it's a massive waste. The only ones affected by actions are the PBN owners that will lose all the value for their work with an action in place.

A good way is to search for that domain on google without http this should show the PBN if not then it may be penalized

Hmmm I need to test this theory out of a sub site then. I am afraid i would forget I added the pbn.
I have been experimenting with a buffer cloud site then tiering it tons of citations, infomation about the city and service. To gain topical authority but i have a cloud site acting as a buffer. I saw movement on a few pages and think this was why but not 100% sure so I thought a pbn links would work the same with a buffer.

Usually, the first red flag is when the PBN site itself starts losing rankings or impressions for even the simplest keywords it used to hold steady. You can check that through Google Search Console (if you dare connect it) or by manually tracking a few random pages in something like SerpRobot.
Another sign is when your buffer sites stop passing power, even though your content and link structure haven’t changed, that’s often when I dig deeper and check if the referring PBN pages are still indexed or if they suddenly dropped.
Personally, I don’t keep PBNs connected for too long without rotation. I usually monitor link velocity and index status, and if I see drops or deindexing trends across multiple posts, I disconnect them early. It’s better to lose a few backlinks than risk the main site getting flagged.

Check for sudden drops in impressions, indexing loss, or deindexed pages in Google. Use tools like Ahrefs or GSC to spot traffic or link loss. If a PBN’s links stop passing signals or vanish from the index, it’s likely hit best to pull or replace it fast.

Keep an eye on traffic or ranking drops on the PBN. If it tanks, better disconnect it from your main site.

I see, the ghost link thing is real so disconnecting early is not a bad idea. I just connected about 100 pages through a buffer cloud page for topical authority and going to wait 8 weeks to see if any changes happen. Not a pbn per say just a tier 3 page with 100 links about the topic pointed at it. I saw good results on this for a parasite link, all of a sudden the page ranked in every city i wanted through the buffer so i think the buffer works.
A pbn will be next.

I agree with @tiiberius , and the 4th point could be that the domain was de-indexed by Google.

2. Track the organic traffic using Ahrefs or Google Analytics (if installed). Sudden drop penalty or dampening.
3. Watch outbound links performance – if the link juice stops flowing (target page loses rankings), that PBN is no longer passing value.
4. Also check for manual action messages in Search Console (if you’re using it on buffers
Best practice is to keep a spreadsheet of all PBNs + their index status + traffic trend. That way you can isolate the bad apples early before they affect your main money site.
I’ve managed large PBN networks before let me know if you want a proper tracking sheet template.

Signs of PBN being penalized are loss of index or sudden drop in traffic. I usually check with Search Console and Ahrefs, if I see anything unusual, I immediately disconnect the link.

bro. I usually just keep an eye on index status and traffic drops. If a PBN gets deindexed or stops passing juice, that’s a clear sign to disconnect it.

I am going to find a aged domain though and connect it to a PBN when the right one comes along. I am very interested in trying this out but unskilled enough to risk the money maker.
I understand what alot ppl are saying checking for deindexing and manual actions checking
You can track link juice? Can you explain?
