Well, it depends.
Back in the day (in the good ol' times) you could simply really on Google's
Pagerank (PR) to determine how powerful a PBN domain is. Unfortunately for us, Pagerank has been eliminated from the world of SEO and since then most people looked for other (third party) metrics to determine how valuable or authoritative a site is.
However, these metrics are highly subjective, can be manipulated and should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially when it comes to expired, auctioned or dropped domains.
The three big ones, as you mentioned are:
- Domain Rating (DR)
- Domain Authority (DA)
- Trust Flow (TF)
While all of these can offer you a baseline to filter out super crappy domains, but they can be artificially inflated. So whenever you find a domain with good DR, DA or TF, you ALWAYS have to check the link profile on top. After all that's where the real power stems from.
We'd recommend to start with a low metrical baseline and instead look at the domains pointing at the site to gauge the quality.
Our baseline filter is usually:
Ahrefs DR is possibly the most accurate third data metrics we have at the moment. DA is somewhat outdated, but still worth a look. We don’t really rely much on TF anymore (even though it has been a great indicator in the past ).
But the actual PBN analysis happens on the link level.
If you head over to ahrefs, plug in your PBN domain into their site explorer.
Then click on “
backlinks” and select “
link type: content” from the menu and make sure to check “
one unique link per domain“. Then sort by “
DR“ .
This gives you an idea of the
unique ocontextual links pointing to the domain and will definitely give you a more concise understanding of the authority and power of the domain, instead of just reyling on DR, DA or TF alone.
