Which is safer and which is more efficient from an SEO standpoint? You figure you are going to buy the domain anyways. Appreciate any replies!

I prefer PBN, coz You can optimized, more relevant link, get link juice and get ref traffic also
 
I understand the optimizing of the anchor text for links is why a PBN might be better, but doesn't link juice from the entire domain flow to the new domain in a 301? As well, can't the old domain still get referral traffic that is going to the new site via 301?
 
301 redirect if have same category to your money site or PBN to boost your money site rank.
 
301 redirect is much easier but far more riskier too unless you know what you do. So, I prefer PBN for your safer side though it is not much easier. Build your own PBN first & rank. You can experiment the 301 redirect later then. Best Wishes - BB

Many have seen good result on rankings as well as better link juice just because of PBN,as you can check marketplace and their reviews.
 
The redirect is very easy to setup. But, Search Engines can easily figure out if you have 301 redirected too many sites to your money site. Also, it should be done page to page resulting in need to create lot of pages on money site.

Nothing beats a Private Blog Network. You have complete control on the content and the links to your money site.
 
301 would be great for a related domain that has lot of links. But i suggest you to go for PBN, it is best way to derive desired traffic which looks more natural to the eyes of BIG G.
 
PBN's are too risky for my money site, or a clients, I feel likes the next shoe to drop with Google. I did like Nate Gotch's alternative idea to PBN's, try to do broken link reclamation instead with the expired domain.
I guess you can only do so many 301's, thank you for the responses!
 
That's hard to say without looking at the domain and what you're trying to accomplish.
