PBN - how big?

I'm going into my first big SEO project, and I want to try to build my own PBN for that.

How many Sites would you recommend in that PBN? (Niche isn't competitive atm, but will be for sure in the future)

And how good must the content be?

Nobody can answer this, you could do it with 10 sites or 1000 sites.

Start with a small number, I'd say 5, then double it within a couple of months. You'll need to slow drip the link element, but hey, why not start with 5 and then keep doubling up after a while.

There is no actual limit. Big question is how much you think you can handle simultaneously as for price and content.

Make your keyword research properly and you'll end up with the right answers for both of your questions,
Make a list of the top keywords & websites within the niche and analyse them carefully,
How many links and how good are the links of the top 10 in SERPs, including the domains and pages linking back to them and their tier2,
By that, you should have a decent idea of how many links depending on the quality and how good your PBN should be to compete with the rest,

All that's left is to actually go into the action,
Start with 10% (as an example) of what you're aiming for in total then adjust based on the results,
Keep them coming until you hit the desired spot, and there, you're ranking

PBN is something that you should be building both for long term and for a variety of sites and projects.

So basically, you start with 1, and you grow as you need more results. I started with less than a dozen sites, and nowadays, I'm maintaining almost one hundred sites.

But for the first project, I only built like 5 sites, considering that the competence was low enough to not need anything bigger. Some of those sites served for other projects, and news were included over the time for other new projects based on new niches.

When you go in the PBN world, this is like a never-ending story.

Depends on your budget and how experienced you are, also harder to keep a clear digital footprint but it's do-able. If I were you id start with a few and if you get decent results and you feel confident slowly build it.

Don't do it

as @MisterF already said, nobody can give you an exact number. since you said there isnt much competition for the keywor(s) you target, i'd start with 10 sites, build them up and then increase if needed.
