PayPal or not PayPal

We will offer paypal payments for our new services in near future and it is interesting to know perception of it by providers and customers,horror stories are bit worrying. Is paypal still mostly preferend payement or people will use alternative providers like moneybookers and alertpay as well.
What should be strategy to minimize losses in case PayPal decides to close or limit account?

There are horror stories for any big billing processor and any company that has millions of customers, so don't get fooled by what you read.

Paypal has its pros and cons, but is stable and reliable service as a whole and is the most widely used processor online and not using it you will be loosing tons of customers.

There are lots of threads around here about it, there's probably nothing to be added..
 
To me, the pros outweigh the cons.

Pros:
- Most widely used online payment processor
- Multiple ways to send and receive money.
- Provides buyer and seller protection
- Has a "PayPal Debit Card" option, which means you can access the funds from any ATM.

Cons:
- You can get a chargeback and lose your money because NORMALLY Paypal does not fight the CC company.
- The fees for higher payments ($500 +) are ridiculous but less than Western Union.
- They may limit your account just to test you to see if you will call in. But that is if you're dealing with $5k+ transactions. At least in my case.

Those are just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more for both categories.
 
@innozemec,@SnakePliskin thanks both of you for input. We are going with just PayPal at first, I realize that PayPal is biggest but wondering does it worth to add other providers as well or it will add more headache rather than customers.

I personally haven't had any issues with PayPal myself but do know people that have.

More Pros
- Easy/Quick setup
- Withdrawal to your Bank Account

More Cons
- No coupons (at least not directly)

Yeah, the coupon thing should apply to fees. Like 'no fees for 1 month' or something like that.
 
You can at least add Skrill and Neteller payment if you can. I rarely use Paypal and most of my IM friends do the same.
 
Paypal is nice aslong you are going to use an account with your real credientals and you have a bank account and a credit card. You simply create a business account, confirm bank and card, wait to get limited, unlimit it, and afterall that, the only issue that could eventually come up in your history of love with paypal is some chargeback if some douche choose to do so with their cc company. But that's unlikely and at around 0.1% chance aslong your service provoide what peoples pay to.

dont use paypal as primary payment method

use another merchant account and then offer paypal as a secondary form of payment. that way you've diversified your holdings and paypal can't shut you down or limit your account for no reason.
 
PayPal is an evil necessity for doing business online in my opinion. The only way I have found to really
save my ass with PayPal or eBay is the use of stealth accounts. That way if the bastards decide your hair cut
looks funny and suspends you at least its not in your name.

Point is customers and the sheep of the world feel safe and warm with PayPal so they want you to be able
to accept it. Some people (average joes) that own a business like a dentist office does not even know what
Skrill or Alertpay is but you can bet your ass they know what PayPal is since it is tied to the infamous eBay.
 
If you use PayPal, in a good manner, long live your PP, otherwise its a saga of limited :)

I've been with Paypal for 10+ years (Business account...)

In my experience, if you don't pull any shady biz with them, they won't with you.
Should you have any issues, get on the phone and speak with a supervisor.

I've filed at least 10+ disputes over the years (including against companies like Amazon) and have won EVERY single dispute.

Compared to all of these other services, I always opt to go with Paypal first.
 
paypal so far is the best and most preferred way.
I would say go with paypal and credit card processors and do keep your backup's ready.Paypal do have horror stories if you're legit you won't have problems 7 times out of 10 you will be safe.
 
I have used PayPal for about 10 years and turned over hundreds of thousands of pounds. Never had any real issues or limits. PayPal is growing all of the time and I would definitely include PayPal as a payment option on your site. If you have a legit business with real address and account then you will have no issues
 
Same here.
I've been using PayPal for 8 years now, got limited once. Picked up the phone and sorted it out.
If you're legit you won't have problems with them. But it's always good to have another processor.
