Paying for directories

Some times I get the best links from myself, bad joke....anyway I see local businesses in peoples blog directory where i live and they charge between 150-350$ a year. Is a directory really work that much or have that kind of power? It is not even niche to whatever you do. Just curious. Some of this stuff looks like a local blogger who made a page on their site and called it directory and added tons companies to it.

I am confused on identifying the power of said directory link can anyone help. Should I be checking the sites 3rd party tool traffic? age? or try to figure out its primary keywords and how it ranks on those

Don't really need to overthink it man, directory links / local citations are really just a way to get your businesses' NAP (Name, Address, Phone No.) out there so it makes it look more legitimate to Google, helping your Google Business Profile (GBP) be more visible (varies based off of how competitive the business is obviously). In a way it's really only just a way to 'get your business indexed', because in my opinion having a GBP only means it's indexable not that it's indexed.

Also directory links aren't THAT expensive, and most of them are set and forget.

IIRC they're about USD$10 for a decent amount (I think 50+, haven't done this in a while so don't quote me) of manual links? (varies based off of location, etc.)
