Pay Per Call affiliate QUESTIONs

So I have been hearing about Pay Per Call affiliate programs and I am just not understanding how this works.

Do I the affiliate advertise the "number" via offline or online methods?

The prospect calls the number and stays on for a certain amount of time and then I make the sale?

Or am I just way off?
