Password protecting a website?

Im sorry but Im not sure where to post this, a mod can move it if they want to.

My question is how do you password protect a website like a forum?

A forum script will give you that option built in.

IF you are talking about preventing outsiders from accessing your forum, I HIGHLY recommend using a custom login script to wrap the forum and whatever else within it, protecting it by sessions. It will cause multiple logins due to having to access the main site login and then the forum script's login.

With that being your only downside, it will password protect the forum. It is also one of the safest preventive measures from being hacked, short of a determined pro that isn't going to be blocked anyway.

Don't fall for password protecting the domain by messing around in your htaccess file unless you know what you are doing, as I've heard some horror stories about people trashing their domain files so bad that they locked themselves out.

So, save yourself the time and trouble...get or build a solid login script protected by sessions and it will work as the gateway for your forum access.

There are various scripts and do it yourself page protection schemes widely available. It just depends on how secure and elaborate you want to go.

Are these scripts available in fantastico when I install a forum software? I looked i google wuick but just foud some ways of using .htaccess to password protect which was way too confusing.
