I quit my job a couple months ago to work on IM projects, and I'm getting some success but definitely not enough yet to fully support myself financially.

So I'm thinking of getting a super passive job, for example night security guard in a mall, or some kind of surveillance job where you work like 10 minutes for every hour, and are basically free the rest of the time. That would allow me to work on my IM projects on my computer while getting paid.

I'm looking for job ideas that would allow that kind of stuff. This thread is not about the ethics of being paid doing nothing or any crap like that. For some people who are in the '' work hard for pennies'' mentality, I know my idea sounds insane but jobs like that DO EXIST. In fact ive had one in the past where I would work in a steel factory and watch a machine running, just so I im there to fix it quickly if it fucks up.. and I was paid 26$ an hour. roflmfao

So here's the key factors this job must have :

- Passive, not doing much work;
- No boss watching over your shoulder;
- Possibility to bring a laptop. Wifi access is a plus;
- Can be low salary, 10$ an hour is enough for me;
- Definitely a plus if it's socially accepted within the job environment to bring a laptop and stuff, but if it's not I don't mind being sneaky.
- Don't mind the number of hours, it can also be a fly-in/fly-out kind of job too.

What ive got :

- I speak english, french, little spanish
- I'm a civil engineer
- I'm in good physical condition, pretty tall and decent size too
- I'm french canadian

Asked here cause there's a lot of outside the box thinkers here. so any ideas welcome! thanks a bunch

To be as clear as possible, HAVE YOU CONSIDERED blogging? You can make some decent traffic if you use the BSTS around here. Also, there are other methods that require you to find a content creation network that pays top dollar for blog posts and reviews.

Best one i've ever had was examiner at oral English exams.. paid 50 euros an hour just to listen to nervous kids trying to string 3 words into a sentence in english.. I even had a chick bring me coffee every now and then.. unfortunately only lasted 1 week...

At OP, you should definitely try setting up some kind of website and selling ad space on it.. you can even pay someone to write articles for you and then you're completely free

I think some of you guys are getting my question wrong...

The OP is looking for a real-world job where he shows up for work, but while at work he can do his own thing some of the time on his laptop. This will give him cash + time to work on his internet business.

Get a job working for a small web development firm, outsource your work load to India or the Philippines.

Obviously you need to be technically capable to fix and errors and bring their work up to spec though.

Does a night-duty security guard work only 10 minutes per hour in your place?! No wonder there are so many crimes happening... during the 50 remaining minutes! Or is it during those 10 minutes every hour?

:D

I don't think answering phone calls all day qualifies as passive job. thanks for the web development firm idea btw!

good jobpm me i have a small online job for you

Here I would say work at a government office, or anything related to them, those guys are paid well and are asked by others to not work too hard...
But hey it might not be like this everywhere ;)

Yes, I think being a receptionist or a gatekeeper will let you do the IM stuff while being paid. Once, we were installing a LAN network in a hotel and the girl working at a reception watched movies on computer all day and gave a key to people from time to time.

Become a minister... nothing's more passive than that! :)

And everything suits your job requirements!

Why did she quit? Was she become too oral and making vocal screams...

haha, actually its the job that lasted just 1 week... the girl still brought me coffee for about 3 months after that though :D

I had a job where I could be online for the whole shift in an internet cafe. I just had to take money of them for the time they wanted and occasionally get off my backside if they screwed something up, like not knowing how to use a program or something. I estimate for about 85% of the time I was there I was able to work on my own stuff.

If you can't find a passive job just remember there is 24 hours in a day. Take any job that comes your way and on your off time use that money you earned to pump back into your IM campaigns untill you're earning enough that you can quit that shit.

Being a Life Ins. Agent can accomplish this if you are decent at sales. There will be around a month of training before you acquire "free time". Then you are basically allowed to run around to do things on your own time. Some offices will want you to stop by every morning and others only once a week. Nobody cares how many hours you work as long as you make sales. You make most of your money by visiting people on your "book" that already have a life policy. You upsale to them and get leads from them(like family, neighbors etc). You will need to pass a test to get your license but some companies will hire you and give you 6 months to complete it.

This job will give you tons of free time. You must be good/decent with sales for this job though. Some companies give you a base salary plus commission and some are only commission. Look for companies like Mutual Savings and American General. I was in this business for a while and the only reason I stopped was because I had kids and decided to stay at home with them. It was a nice job. Check it out if you're decent with sales.

Edited to add: Some offices will pair you up with people at times to go cold calling and you will definitely be paired up for the first month if you're new to the business. Also, there are almost always openings for these jobs.
