Hey BHW!

So I have a real-life busienss I am doing SEO for. Been looking over my competitors links. I can't help but notice a few paid directory links. Now; paid links have recently been spanked as we all know. But this seems to be a prevalent theme amoungst my competitors; paid directory backlinks. They aren't in the footer, but they're paying to be listed on the site.

Do you reckon that if we do the same thing, we'll get spanked? Or are they just lucky?

i have a strong feeling that these paid links are not recent rather that are old and as a result count, anything resent maybe spanked but because these are old and were acquired before the hit on them happened they probably count. Hope this helps

That is an interesting point. If they were acquired a long time ago, do they count. =/

I agree. I've reverse engineered some of the top sites in VERY hard niches and directories are prevalent, as are alt image backlinks above the fold. If anybody knows of any image backlink private networks please let me know.

They can't slap you too hard. Yahoo directory is one of the main ones and That baby is $300.00.

I have a few paid directory websites. It's to a certain prestige business people.

I am not going to shut down my directories cause Google doesn't like them. Screw them. I am using the nofollow attribute.

Yahoo is a paid directory. So, if they slap mine, they better slap Yahoo too.

So whats the take on this.. would buying a bunch of paid directory links help a new site or not?

Paid or not, directories links do help. And its easy to notice their impact btw, just look at the prevalent anchor texts on the directory sites and the keywords you're ranking for.

For example, I used a side keyword that was submitted to directories only for one of my sites. It doesn't appear anywhere else, only in directories. I'm ranking 2nd for that keyword, in spite the fact that my title & description do not contain it.

Every now and then, people come up with the ideas that old SEO is dead. Just ignore them, links still count, you just have to be smart enough to avoid Google's filters (such as Penguin).

I don't think new links on paid directories will be penalized. Infact I found that in my niche all the sites that survived Penguin had their backlinks coming from pretty much the same set of paid directories.

I have been following this strategy for a few weeks now (approximately around end May), it did help in improving my rankings for some tough keywords. But again, i'd reckon that you should go slow on these and maybe build around 15 - 20 links and wait to see their effect. Too much backlinks from directories in a short span of time might raise a flag.

It's all about dosage. If you don't overdo it, it will be just fine.
