Nothing, from the looks of it, google might be tossing PR updates altogether.

Google said in a video not to long ago that if they felt that "users" were not using google PR feature anymore, they would simply stop updating it "publicly" that is. Im assuming this was a hint that google know's the only people using PR are SEO'ers. If you think about it, both google chrome and IE can't use tool bars.

This will also take a hit on the Expired domain market since people mostly rely on PR when picking domains and if google hold's true as to what the were implying about not updating PR anymore, you'll never know whether your PR dropped or risen, of course google will still have this information.

You will probably have PR 0 or PR 1 if/when pagerank is updated.

Remember toolbar PR is an old and crusty metric. Google's internal PR assigned to sites is more accurate.

If you purchase a PR5 and do link building, expect your PR to fall over time. As the old links will die over time with domains not being re-registered etc. Unless people naturally link to your site.

In the past i've had domains lose their pr. For example a PR 7 to PR 3 and such. In some cases PR was retained after update

Most expired domains lose their PR at the next update. I do have a few domains which retain their PR over many, many updates with zero backlinking done, but it all depends on the domain and luck. If you build enough backlinks to your supposedly high PR domain which you picked up after expiring, it will most probably remain neutral or lose 1-2 PRs at the most.
