Which of these is more important when considering the SEO competition for a keyword?

For example, according to market samurai the #1 site for a keyword has 145 page backlinks and 327 domain backlinks.

Will I need to get more than 145 backlinks with the keyword in it to compete, or would I need 300+?

I'm pretty new to SEO so bear with me here.

There is no magic number. Pick an amount of time to allocate to link building each day and start building links everyday. Continue to do so until you've reached the first page... then you can slow it down but keep building links until your #1... at which point choose a new keyword and start over.

I generally target to do 10% more than the page that is outranking me. But, if it's an old domain with high PR then you'll probably have to beat the domain backlinks.

    Hi afanasi,

Samuri rocks, but i here there is a bit of competition for this keyword tool.

I have often wondered about the backlinks they list. You say -
145 page backlinks and 327 domain backlinks.

well, as you know yahoo gives a more complete list of back links, and i suspect that sam only counts the links that Google lists (ie uses for working out which site is best). So your competitor probably has many more links to both pages.

I look at all the factors in the sam table. I figure for a mid to long tail keyword that you can get away with a moderately young (new) versus old site, as long as you get all the basic on-page seo right, and you can compete on PR and back links. If the list is full of PR 3 and higher I know its going to be tough, and likewise your page links numbers are also a considerable hurdle to surmount - since you are going to need to link from high PR authority sites (not the same one over and over).

But specific to your question, I usually rate the specific page links much higher. I know that you can get high serps for a page with low links if you have a mass of visitors to your homepage, and they spill over to that page, but not every large site can guarantee that. I think its a blessing when i see a competitor near the top that has its sub dir listed rather than its homepage, after all, you are probably using the keyword as your URL, and you are pitching your homepage against their sub? So you are going to be putting all your efforts at your homepage to start with.

I usually feel much more confortable going against long tail keywords and competitors with 50-100 links to the specific page.

So as you know, its probably down to the content you can create, then spin, then auto upload etc etc. You are more likely to be more dedicated than the site you are going against (re seo for that term) - so the future looks good.

just my opinion .... G Luck!

Are backlinks really that important? I have a few, not many.. I currently get about 1k hits a day. I had a code in my script that was auto adding backlinks to my site and vice versa but I removed it for indexing reasons. Do the backlinks need to be in your niche?
