Not many people set it to 100 results default. So as an SEO, people who rank in 1st page will get more clicks to their website.
It is obvious bad news for websites that rank on the second and 3rd pages

yeah, I know. The results are quite different from first 10 and first 100.
I am just saying I use 100 for my actual daily search.
For rank/keyword pos tracking, I use tools.
Anyways, to answer your question about my opinion about the revert change. It is a typical Google move, the pagination is better so they change it back.

This is cool, it makes it easier for pages to know where they rank on the SERP.

I like pagination and prefer to click on a page number of my choice instead of again and again clicking on load more to reach the desired page. Yes, settings can be changed to see desired number of results on a page but pagination is sweet & simple.

You shouldn’t be aiming for the 2nd or 3rd page. You should always aim for top 5 of the first page.
There used to be a saying “if you want to hide a body, hide it on the second page of google”.

I think he means, with scrolling, sites that rank on page 2 or 3 has a chance of showing up.
With pagination, page 2 and page 3 have zero chance.

I know, I was taking the opportunity to bring up that old joke.
Personally, I’d prefer just a numerical value as opposed to a page # and # on the page.
So, I’m ranking 55, cool. Then I study the top 20 and mirror them or aim to be better. And if I’m already doing that, just continue the course.

Yeah, it has a 50-50 chance of being positive or negative. There are already updates hunting down sites every month, and now they're adding some spicy stuff. Let's see how it turns out.
