Own private blog network worth the costs?

I think this is one of the stupidest things I've read on BHW in awhile.
Cheers to that.

Wrong, there are a host of very reliable and "free" ways to rank out there. Blog networks are the lazy way to go about it (and yes, I have my own network).
Network links are horrible for ranking sites without fantastic foundations. Likewise, they have a "limit" of usefulness.
They're probably very useful for very easy terms, but once you get into things that actually take some thought to build links to, blog networks are just 1 piece of a complex puzzle.

I regret building my network of around 120 sites, as I simply do not get the results I want usually and it was QUITE expensive.

The best link and i repeat the best link you can get right now after panda/penguin are links from related sites. A link from a pr3 fishing pole site to a fishing pole site is the most powerful link you can get. GUARANTEED. So if your network is made up of all unrelated domains forget it. But if your niche is weight loss and all your network domains are weight loss related you can get position #1 with less than 10 links. Guaranteed. Thats because those are related sites and the links are from related sites.

Google will never penalize a site whose backlinks only consist of related links.

It's a shame that you'd need thousands of these "best links" to make a dent in some markets.

Who says? Read my post where i got page 1 position 1 & 2 in 3 days with 10 links while my competition below me has over 1,000.

You dont know what your talking about. You have your own network? Then its setup wrong.
Of course it is, there's nothing like having a network for DA 16+ PR3+ sites on different hosting companies across 50 class A IPs.
I'm clearly doing it wrong.
Btw, all of these sites were hand built from PR0s with massive campaigns being sent into the network (no interlinking). Took almost 5 months for them all to develop PR3+, but every site has 2-3k backlinks related to this niche
They all even use fully unique content.

Ok, buy 10 domains on weight loss and rank #1 for "how to lose weight fast"
Oh it doesn't work? Well no crap it doesn't. I've tested this so extensively I find it incredible that someone would argue this.

By the way, I rank #1 across 5 medium/medium-high comp terms with one free bot driven campaign without networks at all. I only use my network for very, very high competition terms that pull in at least $5k/week or so (when I'm aiming for ranking those terms that is)
A network of great high PR, high DA sites could push sites up, no doubt. In fact, I originally was going to reinvest some, rather than into bond funds, back into a 1000 domain or so network. However, I am glad I never did this. You could potentially rank some major terms, but you'd eventually get killed anyway.

Dont worry so much about high PR on your network, worry more about how many backlinks those sites have and the quality.

I think that's what I said... I built the sites up from PR0 via massive web 2.0 campaigns and ******** high PR comments etc.

A comment a while back by Meathead1234 suggested that a private network could be useful but people mess it up by whoring it out. If I understood him correctly this is a nice way to link back to all you sites, or client sites perhaps? It does cost some money though but 7K was enough for a startup if memory serves. But, I was thinking that social media could be used too. Since fanpages and free blogs can attract traffic perhaps a subtle link could be placed on that. That way you have cpa and a listbuilder while building links to your main site. Because you would care more about the link itself than the traffic it brings you could make advantage of the unlimited fanpage feature without getting deleted, this might be effective while cost efficient too. All this comes from a rambling newbie of course and I don't even know if I am right but it seems logical. Doesn't it? Anyways, just my thoughts on the subject, I hope you find it useful. Greetz. :) ~EDIT: Sorry for the lack of formatting, since the last update BHW ignores any formatting I do. :(

My network cost slightly under $700 for 120 domains (first year of course)

Does that include the man hours it took to write content, buy hosting on all diffferent ips addresses etc? 120 x [monthly hosting] ='s ????

I believe you. I have no idea what it would cost other than a recollection of a comment. lol There are different sizes of networks to consider I just thought but I honestly have no idea how many sites it would take, or the costs involved. I don't even know if my social approach would work, it just seems logical. But I am a newbie, I don't claim to know anything. :P

I've been investing in a private blog network. Theres a nice automated program that keeps track of your blogs and fills them up nice fresh content. The developers know there stuff, I really was not into blog networks, however it is a whitehat tactic that works well. Throw a little bh automation and it can work really well. Also prices, yes this is what I didnt like. The cost for a 25 blog network per month- if you dont include the cost of the domain, just the hosting- which is on ind. class c's, the software, is about 152 a month. Now if your good at making websites and can get cheap domains that brings the cost down. But I get sites made for a good price. With senx, video, and social it works for me. just my 2cents.

Expertpeon is simply stating that Blog Networks are not the end all be all.
Blog Networks are a piece of the puzzle and nothing more.

And thats exactly it. If I've learned one thing on bhw (and I hope I've learned more) is to have a diverse arsenal of tactics. Video, social, blogs, press release.. Think what the white world does and automate in a good way. And once in a while we learn little tricks that really work. If you just use the tricks for aggressive ranking, well your one algorithm change away from loosing it all. To answer the op's question, start with a couple of blogs and see how it works. If its too much work, move on.

One can utilize free hosting for domains on tumblr or onsugar. There is no need to host it all yourself. It's cheaper and carries many advantages like quick indexing, trust and free traffic.

Interesting reading the various opinions on private blogs- definitely not worth it for one site. Would be good to add your private blogs to a private network, but they all
risk being de-indexed.

I'd definitely start a private blog network. Best way to go these days, IMO.

I have sites in my network that cost double the cost of your entire network.
To get an aged authority site with huge PR and insane BL profiles, you can either pay up front with $$$ or wait years to develop. Time is money to me..
And $700 is crumbs for a network. Most decent sized networks I know of are $15k-100k each..ie the networks that power the big $$$ verticals (insurance, payday etc)

expertpeon is right, 700 bucks can get the job done, you dont need 15k to start, get bunch of brand new domains, go to ALN network start building High pr links to the domain, give or take 3 months your new domain will have atleast pr 2.

There you go, not a rocket science.

It doesn't take years to develop "huge PR and insane BL profiles", that's the problem with many networks.
Time is money, but well-designed bots (which I use for my own sites anyway) don't take any extra time. I generated PR3 and DAs of 16+ (some up to 30) in the network simply by some intelligent campaigns that took around a week.

They're certainly not PR6 with DAs of 60 mind you, but what kind of networks actually have tons of sites like that anyway?
$700 for 120 domains all with DA of 16+ and PR3+ is extremely good... You'd spend about $15k-20k for the domains alone if you bought them. I think 2-3 days of set-up time is worth $15k...

There's lots of advantages to building the network from scratch as well, as all backlinks are relevant and they can be niche specific sites.

If you wanted aged domains you can get 4-15 year old ones every day for $12 with $8 renewel.

That's rather cheap in my opinion. Are all these domains .info's?

.com, .orgs and .nets

The downside to any network is that they simply won't work that well. Yes, they generate some powerful results, but they have limitations post penguin.
People who say otherwise are fooling themselves.

There are also ways to generate tens of thousands of free domains for a network to build them up with no renewal costs, where you only have to host them (yes they are on main TLDs, .com, .org. net etc) but I'm certainly not going to be revealing this anywhere.

I've shift into that direction of late, and I cannot be happier with the decision.

You mean, you found a way to get .com domains for free. But if you talk about the way to do this that i know be aware there is a footprint.
