Overheating

Everybody pretty much covered it:

1) blow out any possible dust
2) put something under it on the far back to make sure its not flat on your surface so it can breathe and push air out the bottom

I did know a little of it

IT started last week with a graphics card error so I tried driver upgrade that was upgraded to latest already so then the screen went haywire with this Invidea graphic incompatibility so then I tried Windows Update it had graphics update on it but it was the same so then I had to roll back doing system restore.

Screen is OK now but its this overheating thing and also hibernate and sleep has just disappeared and I have to shut down every time now.

I can see sleep but its like ghosted but Hibernate is nowhere to be seen

Did you get this sorted? Will only be couple of things - if the fan housing and or heatsink are dusty it will cause overheating - compressed air will sort that out.

It may also be that thefsn bearings are failing - if so you can quite often get to the fan by taking the bottom cover off, if not you would have to open the laptop up - not easy but is doable - just label everything then you would need to replace the fan unit.

You do really need to do something about it though as over heating can do permanent damage - most likely to processor or will cause your hard drive to overheat and fail.

IT still goes off but ususally in the mornings it goes for a few hours OK then I shut down and when I start again it dont last long afternoon and night

ITs clean inside as I opened it
IT is easy to get to the fan
 
this is why I bought business laptop with ssd drive, it's silent and does not overheat
 
GOing 4 hours today so far

But just tried to start Movie Maker and got this message===============

WindowsMovie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not available====


But this is what started last week with a grahpics incompatibility and it caused me a lot of trouble then this overheating started
 
It may not be overheating then, you get other strange errors.
It could be the infamous capacitor rot. Your laptop's age sounds about right. I recently had to trash a 3 year old motherboard with bulging capacitors. At any rate, burn some DVDs with your precious hdd contents.

IF I could just get 900 dollars for my Iphone game programmer I could get out if a mysery life I been havin past few years

and also get a new laptop

This Asus has been a great workhorse past 4 years
 
I have a better idea.

It's called RMClock and there's a free version. It allows you to undervolt the processor. If the laptop is from any time in the last 5 years it should work.

Most processors have idling technology built in to them, so that if you aren't doing anything taxing on the processor, it'll run slower to reduce energy consumption. It's especially useful in laptops to extend battery life. But it's not used as well as it could be.

If you use RMClock, you will often find you can run a laptop at a lower power setting than it needs. For instance, on my Acer, default voltage of the C2D chip in it was 1.3V for when it was running at maximum speed. With RMClock, I was able to run it at 1.125V. In terms of temperature, this brought it down under full load from 90 degrees C to just 60 degrees C. So it stopped powering off! Essentially, RMClock allows you to set the voltage level from a lower multiplier (and slower speed) to a higher multiplier.

To do this properly you'll need to run some stability tests like Prime95 or OCCT and test both max and min multipliers and then some of the ones in between so it doesn't reboot. If you've ever overclocked a processor, it's the same theory of more power gives more stability at faster speed but done the other way around so it's same speed with less power (and therefore heat)

Hope this made vague sense. I've been using it for years on a few laptops and run them 24/7 under 100% load running BOINC applications.
