    Hey all,

I am researching keywords to target for an e-commerce business. How should I judge the competition for a specific keyword? By the overall site backlinks or backlinks to the specific page.

    Example.

Keyword = "keyword phrase" [exact local monthly searches:1000]

1st position result in Google has: 5000 Backlinks sitewide, 6 for the page that google pulls up for "keyword phrase"

Should I judge the difficulty of beating this site based on the sitewide backlinks or to the specific page?
I.E if I were to build 50 backlinks with "keyword phrase" as the anchor text would this increase likelihood of beating the competitor?
