So I was hiring a few telemarketers on oDesk, so I explain EVERYTHING to him, at the end, he says "can I use skype" and I'm like, "the paid numbers, sure." and hes like "no, the free ones" and I am just like "wow. you can't call those numbers with free numbers." D: Time wasters.. :S

yeah i hear ya man they straight up make me want to throw my laptop out my window then run it over 29 times with my car...Sometimes they can't understand the simpliest thing!!

Hi,

Lol! Same thing happened to me. They can't understand a thing sometimes and even if you give them a detailed instruction they can't even follow it!

Gian Sim

x3. I had a massive project to take on and needed some help writing it. After lots of 'great' writing samples sent through I chose a handful of them.

Not one instruction was followed, not one writer was even close to their sample and they just pretty much sucked. One guy said he was starting at 11am and by 2pm he said I'm taking a few days off...

Sacked all of them, got a few Americans and two British writers instead. They wrote very well, I was paying them well and then they just disappeared. All of them on consecutive days. Their work ethic simply vanished. Not returning emails, not answering their phones. Facking weirdos.

In the end, I thought screw them I'll do it myself. A few weeks of 15-18 hour days and I was done. Tired yes, but I got to keep all of the money. Some people might call that greedy, I call it making sure the money gets paid.

@giansim - strong triple duplication

@OP - Yeah, sometimes outsources are a pain in the butt, you just need to work with them and
get rid of the ones that aren't getting you anywhere - even if the good ones cost a little more;
you'll save more time which of course = money.

@Macdonjo: I know your frustraion all to well. But hey, instead of focusing on how much of a timewaste outsourcing is, you now know what you need to ask the applicant about before going on :) Keep going, once you get the right setup, outsourcing is a cash cow.

Having an outsourced telemarketing freelancer obviously require a decent backend setup to make the calls, which most "work from home" freelancers dont have.

In the case of TM outsourcing my opinion is you are better off by paying that extra few bucks per hour and go with a company who specialize in outsourced telemarketing, who knows the drill and already got a decent setup.

Well when I am hiring any outsourcerers I got a golden rule:
Never Hire Indians...
They are the most unserious people on the planet when it comes to freelancing...

I think thats why a lot of people are going with Philipinos these days. More reliable people. Unfortunately Indians have a tendancy to "relax" a little too much

Filipinos all the way! Better English, similar cultures, better work ethic and are still humble and grateful for the chance to work.

I've had some great expeiences with people of Indian decent. Just like with any nationality, you have to weed out the time wasters from the serious players. Pay your reliable help above industry norms and dangle carrots whenever possible to save yourself time and money in the long run.

Dump the time wasters as soon as possible.

True that I feel you. I wasted a lot of time and dollar interviewing/training potential employees....it was very frustrating but it makes it ALL worth it MANY times over when you find that true gem who works hard and smart. And it's so inexpensive for us, yet for them it's a full time living!!!

Patience & Persistence :)

Update:

So today, my telemarketer gave me back a log. 75% said we need to contact the owner. So my telemarketer chose to just write "need to talk to owner" in the log and hang up, instead of asking for the owner! WHAT A WASTE!

I have never had any problems outsourcing, perhaps the issue is poor training or lack of clear job responsibilities being outlined before they start on the project.

For some reason most outsourced workers struggle with problem solving common sense, so give them ABC instructions to follow and make sure it is crystal clear before letting them start the task. Follow up after 30 minutes or 1 hour and immediately correct any issues with the quality of work and it should be smooth sailing from there.

Its all about trial and error. Also, you can not expect to get filet mignon service for Slim Jim prices.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECT! (Joke)

But seriously, isn't that the whole point of outsourcing? To get a service, still at 100%, at a discount price.

In a perfect outsourcing contract, the only thing that should be expected as a problem is a language barrier, but even that has improved 10 fold over the last few years.

And to the OP, not sure where you live but theres alot of workers in the US and UK that will work for minimum wage right now that you can also bind to a contract.

Hope you figure everything out. Good luck!

1) do it yourself
2) hire US/CAN highschool/college kids to do it for cheap

I would never hire a paki or indian to do any type of work an American can do better mainly bc of language barrier issues + i dont want my $ going to them.

First of all, no hard feeling please. A month or so ago, I landed up with a huge order from an American. It was to be a six months long contract and I was to supply him with 50 blog posts of 50 words each in .doc format, with the understanding that outstanding were to be cleared every alternate day. Rates were fixed at $xyz per block of 500 words.

Things were running smoothly and the person concerned was very pleased. However, after a week he requested me to change the word count from 50 to 40. I informed him that this would entail additional work since the topics of the blogs were random so I had to start afresh every 40 words instead of 50, yet receive payments on a 500 words block basis.

He replied back that now the blog posts would consist of 20 words each and I'd have to provide them in an excel sheet using three columns (domain, niche, text). Really sweet, but even copying and pasting domains and niches requires time and the less said about the additional research considering that I'd be undertaking 25 domains for being paid the same amount that 10 domains of 50 words were fetching me earlier.

Oh yes... I've yet to receive payments for the last batch of work.

P.S.: As I mentioned earlier, no hard feelings please... I merely flipped over the coin to reveal it's other side.

Lol indian always try to do everything but. .....

I dont understand the whole outsource phone agent thing. If you go thru an agency expect to pay more than you can hire an English Speaking American here in America. If you are looking to hire a Filipino or Indian from their home, good luck on that one. (believe me, we have tried). First the time difference is a killer, unless they are used to working alone, out of their home at 3 am? , going hourly rate is $3-4.00 per hour, do you actually think a 3-4 dollar an hour worker can afford broadband, computer, and accessories? They work form internet cafes where the quality and noise sucks. The dialect is really the biggest problem. Fortune 500's have spent millions on "accent neutralization", whatever. What they dont understand is American culture, slang, wit, rebuttals and sales. DO you really want this to represent you and your business. We learned the hard way. Dont go cheap, keep it here and pay for it. The best of the best work for the airlines, Computer Companies, Phone Carriers etc. Have you ever called and spoke to one of them recently? What a joke, and they have been put thru months and hundreds of hours of training. They can only watch so many reruns of Seinfeld and Ugly Betty.
