Hey people,

Have a bit of an odd question for you! Have any of you ever managed to outrank wikipedia in high competitive keywords?

Is this possible to do? I am a believer that nothing is impossible so that's why I ask this.

Anyways what's your experiences regarding this?

Hi, yes its definatly possible to achieve this, wikipedia is just another website and as such the stats revolving around how google and others rank pages acts as the same. Only difference is the speed in which google crawls through the sites, i.e it will crawl new content on wikipedia very often but your own dite might be anywhere from every day to every month. But to answer your question, yes its possible. No i have not done it as it doesnt really relate to any of my keywords

I have never been able to beat them. They hold so much authority at google. I would be interested if people have been able to top them.

I have done it. There is no formula, everything depends on niche. Mine was for a 1 word product name. Twitter and wikipedia were floating about on page 1, I made a good page, backlinked, build a high quality 12 site mini-net (linkwheel) and found myself ahead within a month. No magic, no special tactics

Depends on the keywords you are targeting if it is a generic keyword or a name of an actor or singer it is quite difficult but not impossible.
Personally I have got two websites( beauty products) and Wikipedia is not in top 10.

What keywords are you targeting?

Cant reveal the exact niche! But will tell its a trademarked financial niche keyword.

I have outranked wiki page on tech niche product and it again depends on the niche you are in and sometimes it is possible to outrank them and sometimes you have to just give up.

In fact with most Wikipedia articles it is internal linking that helps them to score so high on Google. One approach is to use Yahoo Site Search for the the Wikipedia article in question, and note all of the internal links. Then sign up to become a Wikipedia editor. Go into each page that has has an internal link to the article that you are trying to knock out and change them to no-follow.
Have fun.

1) Underdeveloped articles can be beaten anytime.

2) On the other hand, without massive investment of resources and time that would outweigh most benefits (being 2nd would cost much less and would suffice in most cases), you can't probably outrank on Google the major prime grade Wikipedia articles about very common concepts, such as "domain names".

Right now who appears to be ahead of Wikipedia for DOMAIN NAMES (no quotes)?

Go Daddy (cash to waste)
NetWork Solutions (older than internet).

Enough said.

3) Being just under will do too. If a user seeks " domain names parking ", does he really care about the boring Wikipedia definition? No. He will click some of the companies ranked under.

4) There is also another way to result always over Wikipedia without epic SEO efforts. Paid adverts.

I get your point.

You have just to realize that certain things are worth so much money that can be worth the time.

PPC seems more of the shorterm thing. It works like charm, been doing it for years and still do.

But Look at this,

My keyword gets 30000 searches daily(all seach engines taken together) with PPC I get 600 clicks a day.

The rest goes to top 2 SEO results.

if u write keyword and they are top 1 u will not outrank them.

They are not in position 1, position 6 and I am on 7!

I guess this is all a game of persistence.

Henry Ford principle: "I want it, and I will get it!"

It can be done. For things related to reference keywords it will be much tougher. However, product/retail related stuff is not too difficult because why would someone else link to wikipedia for a retail based keyword.

For example, if you sell New York Yankee Jerseys. There isn't even a wikipedia page dedicated to this. But if your targeting New York Yankees, that could be tough. But really, even if you were to rank for New York Yankees, that's not a buyers/shopping keyword anyways so you may get alot of traffic, but the sales it generates would be minimal and your seo efforts would be better spent on searches with commercial intent.

Outranking Wikipedia or Godaddy for a generic, top tier key-phrase like Domain Names or Web Hosting means

1) You know php, htaccess, regex, mysql, xrumer and prstorm like a priest knows the Gospel;

2) your girlfriend is having fun with the guy next door while you stay days without sleeping;

3) your competitors will report you twice per day to Google for paid links they placed to frame you (the rest of the day they try hard to discover your links with siteexplorer);

4) paid scrapers will try to spamdex your own content after stealing it, to make you rank down (it is a business);

5) An heroic Indian manual reviewer from Goooogle (eg, 74.125.16.2) will come to visit you whenever he has some free time, just to blacklist someone who MUST have done something blackhat, because you don't pay for Adsense and aren't a big corp...so in doubt let's ban

6) with the resouces you needed for these generic terms you could have ranked first for cool (comparatively) low competition long tail keyword niches like

cheap vps canada
forex vps
web hosting australia
cms ready hosting
unlimited bandwidth hosting

or whatever saleable stuff Wikipedia can't cover if not in a spammy article.

7) you are the greatest benefactor of hard working Indians well trained to spam social networks and social bookmarks

8) You will be having a heart attack anytime Gooooooogle introduces a new Caffeine-like update, and you will rush checking your own rank to see if it is affected, maybe without knowing that now the fat G is personalizing the search for all losers of the universe by default. Every loser gets his unique tailor made serp page... SEO is always less a constant and general achievement.

Let's also remember that...

9) The searches showed aren't reflecting the amount of people searching. If you make 100 searches for your term and nobody else searches it, it will still show 100 searches performed for it next month.

10) There is also a radical difference between people who search and people who buy. People who buy are usually rare animals with a long tail...

If you are sitll convinced (as I've been) go for it;p

That is hilarious. It's little nuggets like this that keep me coming back.

Cheers!

Yes, Wikipedia is very much beatable depending on how generic the keyword is. Since they aren't even position 1, that just proves my point.

LOL That is a good joke!

You got to realize the people that make serious money in this business are not doing a one man show!

Its not me alone sitting here analyzing stuff.

I have a team of people doing SEO! And they know SEO like the "priest the gospel" LOL

It really depends on the keywords you are targeting. But I would say yes it is possible to outrank wikipedia. Unless you are targeting the keyword "Wikipedia" :P

By the way you could try getting a link from wikipedia on your related keywords. If your content is good and targeted they would be approved and you'll get yourself a strong backlink to outrank the wikipedia itself!

i doubt it can be done
I think that if you compete in an exact match you will lose
