Outrank competitor with similar domain?

I am looking to join an affiliate program for a particular software product however while researching domain I found that a competitor has a very similar name by one letter. For example if my competitor was Amazon my domain would be iAmazon.com. Note that I'm not necessarily trying to emulate my competitor, I just happen to like the domain name which is a very close variation of his. Could I still rank this website competitively or would Google look down upon a domain with a similar name as another selling the same product(s)?

I did that 1 time (4 years ago) with a clothing web shop. I had.net and my competitor had .com
I ended up getting top place in google, and many people started to shop in my store because they simply thought we redesigned the webshop.
Worked out great, (for me, not my competition!)

BUT! I have heard that now a days, google does not like when someone is piggybacking on someone else.
So if your both affiliates, and selling the same style products, then i would be careful.

Go for it with no problems. If you will be better in terms of content, backlinks and so on, you will be before him without issues.

you can outrank them if you get more backlinks(quality ones) then him , i outranked one samename.com with my samename.net few days ago. so its definitely possible.
