Other ways...

Hey, I understand that some people found out about bitcoin when Satoshi published the Whitepaper.

Apart from strict word of mouth advertising, bitcoin mailing lists, how else could people have known about bitcoin in 2009 or maybe 2010?
Feels like you're writing Bitcoin history, man. Important stuff. Haven't read any big Bitcoin books

Word of mouth or being in the right communities at the time were the main ways people became aware

But how could people be in the right communities in 2009 or 2010 latest? How could people know of such communities in the first place?

Well the idea of digital currency existed prior to bitcoin, Nick Szabo and Wei Dai are just two people who were working in that area prior to the creation of bitcoin. So its not farfetched to think they and/or others were part of forums or communities where they could share ideas

Where all forums/communities illegal or only some?

Mainly from cyberpunk coms on forums. Especially back in 2009 no-one but the first adopters were using/mining it.

But was it legal or illegal?
Back in those days very little people used it, and barely anyone knew about it - so how/why would it be illegal? Even today there’s governments that don’t support the use of cryptocurrencies, but the fact that it’s decentralized makes it very hard to regulate.

Yeah but to know of such forums would require that someone else told you about it or maybe the bitcoin mailing lists...

Probably, yes. Bitcointalk was a pretty small forum - especially back then.
