I've just bought some hosting for a site and checked for other sites hosted on the same IP and found six others, all porn sites. I wouldn't normally have thought to check but I've seen other people talking about this and can't remember the outcome. Searching on here isn't all that rewarding an experience at times.

Is this going to have any impact? Does it matter?

    I wouldn't worry about it.

I had read though, that many niche sites on one IP was penalised by Google? Or are we talking dozens of sites before that happens. I think it was due to the backlinking but can't remember now.

I think the main concern is if you were to put a bunch of domains about the same niche on the same IP and then interlink them. If the niches are spread out or are not interlinked, it shouldn't be a problem.

Matt Cutts posted a blog a while back about how dedicated ip addresses are not important for rankings, I'll post it if I can find it.

A few questions would go into play on if you need to get a new ip or not. If you just have an affiliate site then i would not worry about it.

but if you planning on sending emails and have the site up for a regular business you will run into some issues. If these adult sites are sending out emails you run the risk of the ip getting blacklisted, if this happens customers will not be able to get your emails.

    get you a dedicated IP

Is receiving emails the only issue? It's an affiliate site so that isn't a problem.
