If you had to choose between doing ORM consulting or SEO consulting for local businesses, which would you choose and why?

Apparently SEO is losing the specialty title. Now you have to be well rounded in other types of marketing including SEO, but can't be SEO alone. That's just what I've heard.

ORM seems to be pretty good right now, people are relying on reviews like a personal referral. It's a big deal.

I'd honestly do both, mix the services up and use the contrast principle to get people to buy services.

Why not both? In packages with web design and social media management.

Both, plus additional services.

If you dont know how to provide a service hire a freelancer and charge a bigger cost to get some profit.

Now a days you have to be versatile in all areas.
I offer clients web design, seo, orm, social media management, google places and listings optimization and iphone/android app development for their business for $1000 a month for a 6 month contract. Then after words I renegotiate and give them a discount for a 2 year contract at $800 a month.
The clients loves paying me to do all that for them since they would be paying a part time employee the same amount for a simple job.

Keep in mind im in the USA.

I would do both and maximize the lifetime value of the client. The hardest part of offline is landing a client. Your job as is to free up as much time for a SMB owner so they can focus on running their business. ORM, SEO and any other related service which has perceived value to the client should be free game.

You go with whatever you are best at it.

Then you talk like a PRO to the potential buyer.

ORM itself has been proven by members to be very lucrative.

some of them charge around 1k/month for a client.

but you have to have some sort of closing skills to do that.

Do both.

If you can close women, you can close sales. If you can't close, hire someone.

I also offer both services and others. But if I had to choose I'd go with ORM. It's easy to find clients and it's very difficult for someone to see a negative listing about their company name or their personal name in the search engines and have them NOT sign a contract.

Both have the same end game goal; to drive more sales for your clients' business.

I would prefer ORM as you can control the outcome of your work, to some degree. With SEO, you are never in complete control - or anywhere near it.

Ask yourself, why do you want to provide SEO?

To drive more traffic.

Why do you want more traffic?

To make more sales.

If the goal is to make sales, why not implement paid marketing for your clients - something that you are actually in control of - and then sell them your marketing services to run their campaigns for them.

I would do that, in place of SEO.

I haven't attempted either, but ORM seems more attractive to me. I feel like the ideal customer is the average joe business man who is great at owning his/her business but isn't very tech savvy. To those customers, I think explaining ORM and selling ORM is far easier than selling SEO.

I'm working on getting into this, and my approach would be to start by selling ORM and then offer SEO as an added bonus (the SEO work I would simply outsource).

Both, because when you have a client it's easier to offer them more services but ORM because it hasn't been sold to them as much most likely compared with SEO.

Just call it "Internet Marketing" or better yet, "Marketing."

Ultimately, the method is irrelevant to the client. What you do for them is what they want to hear. If you go to a restaurant, there are sous chef's, chef's de partie, head chefs, kitchen cleaners, etc. none of us think about that when we go out to eat - we just want the meal. Businesses who want online custom are the same.

orm all the way. Good orm will create the seo you need in some cases.
