Research keywords and write a lot of articles, and sure, you'll get backlinks naturally.

Mind you, you're not likely to get strong references from blogs, but from lists and bookmark sites

You need to have a really high-value post backed by solid reasearch and statistics/data and tell editors/journalists about it to get organic backlinks from high DR sites.

Organic link building takes time and is not something you have a lot of control over. That said, people get organic links everyday.
