Organic KW's-? What determines KW indexation

Noticing sites like Patel or Ahrefs etc..they have the organic keywords display....ie showing how many keywords a site is ranking for in a given month...some sites have a ton of these indexed KWs 50,000+ some have 540...outside of having a "ton" of pages-which may or may not help...how does one increase their organic keyword volume throughout a site...seems some sites just grow these into the sun and some cant go above a few thousand regardless of how many pages they create...it would appear more and higher DR affects this, meaning a site with high DR can get more keywords than low DR sites (pretty rare to see sites with low DR ranking for 100,000 KWs)..ie sites with weak link profiles...outside of getting hyperlinks to that keyword externally what internal factors can increase the volume of the keywords ranking on a page or throughout a site...beyond the obvious a site can have relevant KWs but are basically being ignored while another site has the same keywords and they are included in their oragnic keywords

seems this is random and selective some pages for "some reason" just get that and some don't, content or not..and sure you can target internal links for that keyword but the page you want to get ranked for is the destination you aren't going to link to the page itself...some pages are ranking for keywords not even on the page...and through ahrefs or some other check it's not due to backlinks on that page no hyperlinks..

Anything obvious im missing?

Backlinks obviously as you said. Then, you can put these keywords on the page and put them in h2/h3 tags. Another thing you can do is to find lsi keywords related to those keywords using ntopic and optimize your page using them.

The examples you mentioned cannot be analyzed purely by technical aspects we know I'm afraid. It looks like search engines have a list of websites they prefer to rank and they get different treatment.

But the things you mentioned definitely play a role.
