.Org VS. Hypen when no .COM is available. Which one do I choose for a devlopment?

Hi guys,

I am doing a few long term legitimate website projects for finance and related industries. These websites will provide infomation/articles as well as be connected to a few professionals where they can business leads.

Most .coms that I would prefer are long gone. However I still need to create these websites. Do you think it is better to use .coms using hypens (example-site.com) or use .org (examplesite.org). This is going to be a high quality and long term site that is for real store front financial professionals and thwy will most likely use the domain name for their offline/online marketing.

Please let me know. I really appreciate you thoughts and time.

i go for .org prefer not to use "-" i think it's matter in SEO, IMO

.org sucks, I have a domain with 2 - in the domain and I am listed page 1 in Google for many, many popular terms.

(and it's an autoblog).

Everyone forget about SEO for now, the extension you choose will not affect SEO or anything like that, it's the offline target audience that will be affected by the extension. I'm really not sure whats better to choose but I would guess most people prefer a .com but then again if it has a hyphen in the domain name, the target audience might end up going to the site without the hyphen. So I would recommend asking yourself whether the target audience will have a problem with the hyphen or the (not very well known by offline users) .org extension.

IMO, the name position matters more.. So It really depends.. Like for example I want a domain name for an organization or a group of workers etc etc..., I would take .org.

Get the .org, "generic term .org" is easier to say and remember than "generic hypen term .com"

i got #1 with ease with a *****-*****-*****.com in front of a domain with no hyphens.com

Personally, I'd say go for the .org although SEO wise it doesn't matter AT ALL.


Some hyphen .com's are also good. If you are able to I'd say you buy both, especially if it's a long term website.

Yahoo loves (or used to love) hyphens. Google, not so much.

Go for org.


I've hadorgs rank well.

I have owned many many domains and I have found it doesn't matter what you use. Could be .info, .com, this-name.com, etc. Quality content trumps all and owns the search engines. I like to use hyphens for cleaner reading...but that's just me. I like to read my-site-rocks.com instead of mysiterocks.com. Just take whatever and put up some content though...each to their own.

i think hyphen looks spammy, but then again, i know some .com's with hyphens in them that are very successful. i think it's just kinda personal preference.

Well heres some interesting food for thought. i have a dot com and i have a dot com same term with hyphens.. both sites have the same content jsut moved around a bit and the domain age are both the same.. my hyphen dot com is HIGHER in google.. and personally i think its easier to read with hyphens.. I also have dot infos but mainly use them as redirects as i can buy 10:1 so prefer that for traffic dumping..

You should choose sites in this order: .com , .org , then . net. Look at Google's top ranked sites and see now many hyphenated sites you find. You probably won't find any....ont he other hand .org sites rank quite well in Google.
