    Hello,

I am in the process of registering a domain for an educational website. Many of the .coms I'm looking for are taken. Would a .org suffice? Will it hurt SEO? Or perhaps it looks better for an educational website.

What are some of your experiences?

    Thanks.

Hmm... yes this domain (.org) change can affect Seo a lot.

For an educational website, a .org may be best. It lends itself credibility in the mind of your viewers, and it's not much harder to rank a .org from a general standpoint - I'm not sure if any added difficulty is lessened given that it's educational, and thus it may even be easier or at least not a disadvantage to have a .org (just theoretical).

For example, do searches for various educational keywords. You'll find that many of them - if not all of them depending on the keyword - are .orgs.

What generally makes extensions besides .com difficult is that you're often pitting a .net/.org/.info against several .coms. So it could be 1 .net vs 100 .coms. Naturally, the .coms have the advantage, which makes ranking another extension difficult and why it's usually advisable to have a .com.

However, when you get into educational keywords, your competition is different. It could be like 1 .org vs .60 .orgs and 1 .org vs 40 .coms. Theoretically, this lessens the usually difficulty you would have ranking a website that isn't a .com because all the other websites also predominantly share your same extension, and so your .org is no longer an outlier like it would be if you were facing 100 .coms.

That said, it's not advisable to purchase the .org version of a website if the .com is taken. Find a name that is unique to you and isn't taken in some form or another.

The dissent to my idea doesn't seem to hold any quality contributions.

Some great points arti. .orgs have a lot of credibility from certain user's point of view. I've come to trust them more than.coms for some topics i study.

I do register more .org than any other extension and i always get great results, .org brings in a lot of credibility and trust + your niche is "education" so it would be the best extension for it even if .com is available.

    Thanks for the great replies.

I should say that although this is educational, I still plan to monetise this website using Adsense and Amazon affiliate. Is the .org still a good idea in this case?

My general feeling towards .orgs is one of trust, but my main focus is actually being able to have the site ranked.

Since it focuses around education I would think .org is just fine and suitable :)

I use a .org for my micro niche and I have no SEO knowledge at all besides on site SEO and it's ranked top page for a long tail keyword. It more if you want to start a branding like a educational video service branding type .org would seem more appealing.
