Order of creating backlinks

I'm coming from the paid advertising world and I'm constantly trying to learn more on the organic SEO side of traffic now. So I have what is probably a simple question.

Do you create all of your backlinks from tier 1 (such as 2.0 blogs, etc) to the moneysite homepage first to build authority and then later go back and add some to inner pages as necessary?

I kind of started the opposite way with inner pages and now recently starting to do homepage links and I guess I'm looking to see if I'm doing it right or not.

Point to homepage but also the innerpages you want to rank for.

It depends on your site structure also.

For me its not a very big deal. You can simultaneously build links to both inner and homepages at the same time without worrying about the order.

Yes! I have experienced great results with Brand Anchors for Homepage.

Another tip for you is to look for your top 10 competitors in SERP and check how many links they have made to their root domain and how many to their inner pages and decide accordingly. (Use Ahrefs tool for Backlink analysis)

That makes it so simple. Homepage and pages you want the visitors to come to (usually ones with affiliate links). I think I've just been overthinking it! Thanks MisterF.

This site is a content site around a hobby that has around 50 or so quality articles. I just don't have the traffic to go with it...for the searches with decent quality I'm not top 3 but I'm going to keep at it until I am. I actually worry a little that I am building an informational resource but not enough pages that actually try to target people ready to buy that I can refer.

I haven't been looking as much at competitors because the site is still trying to stand up but you're 110% right on it. The answer and results are all right there! Thanks LiveCaseStudy for pointing out that the answer is just looking at your competition as google sees it.

I did take a minute to check on a couple competitors that have sites more like mine (blog-style and not a store with articles) and one is even doing a link wheel with keywords on badly spun content. I'm doing tier 1 content for web 2.0 and Rachmaninoff links by hand with unique articles so I think it's just a matter of time.
