Optimize images for SEO

You use lightroom. You asked if adding keywords in the edited image as part of seo optimization for image.

I hope i got that part right.


-- The Image File --

Keywords added to the image file, will become part of the image file it self.

Keywords added to the image file itself (which later on exists in as EXIF data), won't be count as an SEO optimization for image. At least not until / as of today Nov 26, 2021. All search engine almost agreed on 2 things if you want to rank your image better in search engine - re: the image file :

▸ File name : the name you give your file.

this is where you actually want your keywords in. Real life experiences : Pictures of book renamed as trees.jpeg, showing up when user search for trees.

▸ Image size. the smaller file size the better.

Some of the replies here referring to the tools they use or recommend to use, to cut this size part. Since making the image smaller in size but not loosing quality of the picture is also called optimization, that's why some of the replies mentioned the resizer/size optimizer tools instead of keywords as exif data that you asked for. As oppose of adding some information (such as keywords, lens, aperture, shutter speed, etc), almost all the size optimizer tools will remove these part to cut the unnecessary weights to the file size.

-- Where you Place that Image --

If, and only if, you want to place your image file in a web page, and then --- you want that image, as well as that web page rank better, the alt part suddenly become important.

Compress your image, make it light as much as you can, optimize your image according to your keywords, use ALT tag its the most important thing for seo.

I usually use Photoshop or some online tool if I am in a hurry to adjust the dimensions of images first, and then I upload them to TinyPNG or some other software that compresses their sizes without ruining the quality. Once I upload them on the site, I just add alt-tags to optimize them completely.
