Optimising a "general" magazine for SEO (black or white hat?)

Hello - I've had an online magazine for a few years now - I get some decent enough hits (mainly from twitter, comp sites) but I'd like my monthly hits (4k ish) to be more like daily hits! It's on crappy joomla so i don't get a lot of leeway and I know very little about html but I'd like to be able to improve my rankings.

My question is - how to you SEO when every page is different, on a variety of subjects such as skincare, travel, home and garden etc? Are there any black or white hat tips I could use? I'd be really keen to get it "bigger" and attract some regular advertisers. the general keyword seo doesn't seem to work and it wouldn't really help with the press release type articles I need to write and get sent to me from contributors.

It's not getting enough traffic for affiliate stuff (I don't think) and adsense tends to be american stuff and I don't want to put my readers off.

Any tips would be great - the magazine is called simply (hyphen) woman so it appears in google fine and I've noticed it appear on page one for the *very* occasional search (product searches mainly) but other than that - never makes an appearance

I've read a lot of seo stuff so it's more the "insider" stuff that perhaps I haven't had exposure to i'm looking for...

Google ranks pages not sites so the fact that you cover a lot of different topics is not really an issue. I would pick your top 10 converting pages and start working to rank them for the appropriate keywords. Then rinse and repeat. Either that or you could do your groups by subject matter first, rank all the skincare pages then move on to travel.

Either way break it down into something workable that is a workable size and keep repeating.

thanks. Another quick question - my readership and content is aimed at the British market. Will having US backlinks affect my ranking and do I want to aim for British website backlinks (not necessarily dot co dot uk domains but just UK orientated sites?) or does it not matter where the backlinks come from..?
