I've read several differing opinions here.

    1) Some people(Spencer Haws, etc.)think that linking to authority sites gives some kind of backwards ranking authority(you link to wiki). You pass link juice to that target site, and you gain authority.

    2) Some people think that linking to an authority site gives no SEO benefit, you simply lose your link juice(many people on these forums).

I personally have seen no benefit. Anybody have some experience here?

I've been testing and experimenting a lot with this as well. IMO don't bother with it.

Just write the article for the reader. And imagine that the reader is your grandma, which means that you will have to link to other sites to explain some phrases or something like that

I'd not focus on outlinking at the start -- I'd rather focus on the aspect of link wheel building for inbound links so that you aren't spilling your link juice out to others so much

I always link out to authority websites where it makes sense and personally believe it gives your website a little more leniency when it comes to deciding how aggressively search engines will analyze your SEO practices, especially when dealing with local businesses.

I don't think there's any benefit at all.

Yep, I always link out to authority sites. Like wikipedia for one. I can't tell you for a fact it helps but I know a lot of experienced SEO's do it. So I do it too.

And even if it doesn't help you're rankings, you're helping your readers and aligning yourself with other authority sites (psychologically).

IF you want your site to be an authority, interlink to your other authoritative articles that go more in depth on certain aspects. There is no reason to leave your site if you can provide that information.

What's this shit about leaking link juice? If the article is relevant to yours and explains a concept in more detail than you plan to write about, wouldn't it be nice to show the ready you've done your research?

Is there an SEO benefit? Many articles are just impractical to link out, plus your pointing your traffic somewhere else, which is never good buisness. Your also sending link juice away from your site, not to mention the time spent doing the actual outbound linking. I'm all for helping the reader, but if there is no benefit, or a net loss, I'll just take the chance that the google traffic that typed toaster into the search engine, doesn't need me to point them to a wiki page explaining what a toaster is.

I think it is to make your content more legit, more natural link building and not just doing something to promote things that would make you money. If you write about a serious medical condition, wouldn't you link to an authority site that can provide reliable information on the said topic?
