Being in the security business I would say for free use AVAST (I don't work for them by the way). AVG let me down big time in the past. I would also have a copy of Malwarebytes installed on all machines just in case.
However, no security software is a 100% and that's just the nature of technology and security. For 99.9% protection run Windows 7 under a Virtualbox session on Ubuntu 10.x. We are talking bulletproof protection!
